WASHINGTON — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is crisscrossing the country as he lays the groundwork for an increasingly likely 2028 presidential campaign — refining his pitch, building relationships and working to move past his bruising 2024 defeat by President Trump.

The term-limited Sunshine State governor, 47, started the week by joining business leaders at the Milken Institute’s global conference in Beverly Hills and will keynote the New York Republican Party’s May 19 annual gala at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan.

“I’m in my mid-40s. [20]28, you know, maybe beyond that, I think that there’s a lot of runway,” DeSantis said Monday when asked if he would run for president.

Go, Ron,go. We need a healthy primary season in 2028 with every strong Pubbie running so we can select the best through trial by primary, just as we did with Donald Trump in 2016, 2020, and 2024. My list of current strong candidates, not necessarily in order is: Vance, Hegseth, Rubio and DeSantis.

The guy destroyed his chances by running against Trump in 2024. It should go down as one of the biggest political blunders in recent history.

Richard Nixon in 1960, Ronald Reagan went for it in 1968.

As long as it does not become a circular firing squad. I still favor Rubio. I don’t trust him completely but l think he is the strongest in the general by far and we must win 28

No he didn’t. But I don’t think DeSantis has the like ability factor that JD has or the chops to deal with global adversaries that Rubio has to win at a national level. Great governor however.

Governors make better candidates in most cases. Executive experience. Dealing with the other side. Democrats respected Reagan. They’ll respect DeSantis. JD will feel like Humphrey in ‘68-tied to an unpopular LBJ. 4 kids. Marco would be a better ‘kinder and gentler’ candidate who Trump taught to stay firm and not go wobbly like the last kinder/gentler one turned out. Would Marco attract more hispanics? I would think they’re not as crazy as the lefties are taking the party.

There’s nothing wrong with running in a primary, but DeSantis basically ran against the equivalent of an incumbent candidate who had overwhelming supplier.

And to make matters worse, he was exposed as an awful candidate on the campaign trail.

The DemonRats made huge blunders in 2020 and 2024 by using an essentially soviet-style system to select Biden and Harris. Right now I’m not making a pick; instead I want to see a hard primary season that will filter out the losers and give us the strongest candidate.

Amen! Hope he runs. He will make a great president. Also, we need a sane and contested primary where all candidates have a thoughtful conversation about our country sharing the value of liberty.

Not sure how well he'll come back, but it sure was a foolish decision to run in 2024. I think DeSantis bought into the Beltway narrative that Trump was going to be taken out by the legal attacks.

Still, I think DeSantis has been an excellent governor, and would do much better than expected in a primary without Trump. However, my early support would be with Rubio. He consistently shows a deep grasp of the issues, and communicates it very well.

Right. I agree with you. The Dems will continue to use the same system to make Gavin Newsom their front-runner.

No one is going to remember what DeSantis did in 2024. If he wants to run for President, he has to improve his campaigning skills.

Right now, my money is on Rubio.

When I was with the employer that I retired from my boss wrote a brilliant, hilarious memo that showed how auto correct makes repeated hilarious errors. In many ways it’s like the old GPS that would happily send an ignorant driver into a farm field instead of to that driver’s real destination.

Ron DeSantis has a very remarkable resume’ as a governor. His conservative credentials are impeccable.

He gets things done, while so many others in the GOP stand flat-footed.

Plus, he hasn’t been rubbing elbows with the denizens of the Beltway.
