Senate Republicans are seeking $1 billion of taxpayer money to help fund “security adjustments and upgrades” linked to Donald Trump’s White House ballroom project.

The proposal was outlined in a reconciliation package focusing on federal law enforcement and border security spending, which was released by Sen. Chuck Grassley, the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, on Monday.

The legislation also allows for part of the $1 billion package to be used for security upgrades for the East Wing Modernization Project—also known as Trump’s ballroom project—including “above-ground and below-ground security features.”

In this day and age $1 billion for White House ballroom security doesn’t seem excessive, as crazy as that seems. This is after all a facility that will host a huge roomful of U.S. and foreign dignitaries.

Heard rumors that the underground bunker is being totally renovated ( no, not with a basketball court) with cutting edge technology. This would be a matter of National Security and that would be a government responsibility

Only one billion?

HA!

Couldn't we just take it out of the savings we get from stopping payments to autism centers and daycare facilities (and so forth) in Mr. Walz's Minnesota?

How much of the billion is for the ballroom and bunker?

Earlier I saw a headline that said 1 billion for ballroom, but then listed the money as for ballroom related AND for the Secret Service, without knowing specifics the 1 billion dollar mention is meaningless.

The money is for the modernization of FDR's secret bunker that was built under the East Wing.

See my post about it here.

The link is in Grassley’s May 4th Senate News Release, “Grassley Releases Senate Judiciary Title of Reconciliation Bill to Fund Law Enforcement, Safeguard American Communities”. From COMMITTEE ON THE JUDICIARY, Section 5. United States Secret Service (page 5 of 6):
“In addition to amounts otherwise available, there is appropriated to the United States Secret Service, for fiscal year 2026, out of any money in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated, $1,000,000,000, to remain available until September 30, 2029, for the purposes of security adjustments and upgrades, including within the perimeter fence of the White House Compound to support enhancements by the United States Secret Service relating to the East Wing Modernization Project, including above-ground and below-ground security features.” [Boldface added]

Like clockwork, the Republicans in the Senate introduce bullcrap unpopular legislation heading into the elections. Just like Linda Graham with his national abortion ban.

Pass the SAVE act and STFU Senators.

basketball court! I forgot about that. I wondered if it still existed. Answer: Not really.

AI

The basketball court at the White House still exists, but it is not a standalone facility — it is the South Lawn tennis court adapted for full‑court basketball use.

Under President Barack Obama, the existing tennis court on the South Lawn was repainted and fitted with removable basketball hoops and lines so it could be used for both sports factually.

This change, made around 2008–2009, allowed the space to host basketball games alongside tennis matches. The court has been used for events ranging from college basketball teams to special programs like the Wounded Warrior visit Lead Stories.

However, in 2020, the court was reconfigured as part of the construction of the new White House Tennis Pavilion on the South Lawn Wikipedia. The pavilion project involved altering the tennis court’s markings and layout, and basketball lines were removed at that time Wikipedia. While the space remains, it is no longer in its full basketball configuration — it is now primarily a tennis court with the pavilion nearby.

$1 billion is only jaw-dropping when it’s not associated with the amount of social services looting that’s going on in a mid-sized city.

Yes but the taxpayer cost for the ball room was supposed to be exactly $0. If the republicans allocate so much as a dollar to this out of taxpayer money there will (or at least should) be hell.

Why? Considering the absurd things the government wastes billions on, this story seems like an absolute nothing-burger.
