Social media giant Meta is threatening to shut down access to Facebook, Instagram, and even WhatsApp in New Mexico if a judge orders the company to implement sweeping child-safety mandates sought by Attorney General Raúl Torrez.
The warning comes ahead of a bench trial beginning Monday in Santa Fe, where the New Mexico Department of Justice will seek court-ordered reforms to Meta’s platforms after previously securing a $375 million jury verdict against the company for violating the state’s consumer protection laws.
According to newly unsealed court filings first reported by Source New Mexico and expanded upon by The Verge, Meta says the state’s requested relief is so broad and burdensome that compliance may be impossible—leaving a full withdrawal from New Mexico as its only realistic option.
“Granting this onerous relief could compel Meta to entirely withdraw Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp from the State as the only feasible means of compliance,” the company said in its filing.
Meta argues that New Mexico’s demands would require the company to build entirely separate New Mexico-specific versions of its platforms, which it says would make little economic or engineering sense.
Among the most aggressive changes sought by Torrez, according to court filings are requirements that Meta:
Meta says many of those requirements are unrealistic and impossible to guarantee in practice.

This is exactly why Meta/Facebook is lobbying to have age verification embedded into operating systems instead of into web sites.
They want to shift the legal burden.
Same here. I've never used Facebook or Instagram. I don't do social media sites. Been here 28 years. This place, and my doctor appointments give me all the socializing I need.
META is having a rough go as of late. I know just recently they pulled a plug in that whole VR thing that Zuckerberg was trying to push. They spent tens of billions from what I understand if not more for what ended up being just a big money pit.
Strangely enough, I just in the last two weeks created a Facebook account( never had one before) with a fake name because i’m not interested in the social media thing, I created the account because I wanted to join some boating and fishing forums that I could only access if I was a member
Anyway, since I got the account, I did catch myself a couple times looking up old people from high school and from my past. And one of the things that stood out to me is that it seems like a lot of these folks were very active from about the years of 2005 to about 2020 or 2021, and then it seems like all activity just kind of died off or went to a slow trickle .
If I weren’t the wiser, from a brand new member of the Facebook perspective, it looks like the platform is slowly dying with just old shadows and echoes of activity from years ago.
Seems Zuckerberg’s history and donations of $500 million to democrats isn’t protecting him here.
The notion that META could control every user and every pornographic post to “99% accuracy” (whatever that means and basis what standard) is indeed absurd, and everyone knows it.
But it is a Sword of Damocles leftists / government would love to constantly hold over META’s head.
If the issue of Musk/Twitter taught us anything, its that the Globalist/Left will not cease in their efforts to control social media, as it now controls mainstream print and TV media.
And also likely this is how Raul Torrez is trying to get a grasp on the greasy pole of national politics.
How does a platform (phone, tablet, PC, etc) “know” who is using it? Passwords, PINs - whoever possesses can use them. Biometric means is the only possible way, and I imagine the creative will spoof that before long. This won’t slow the bad guys down very much.
The real goal here is to provide gov’t with absolute access to everything that everyone does on the internet. Privacy, barely here now, will absolutely cease to exist.
Social media, like these and TikTok, are responsible for allowing much of the nasty rhetoric and hate speech by their members against American ideals in general and President Trump in particular. They push the freedom allowed by the First Amendment.
Meta sucks up to the Police State?
>>just kinda died off

Missing the ones that took the Chinavirus2019 shot?
All the cool people are fleeing Fogeybook and going to MySpace...
Maybe they retired year by year, and no longer had break-time at work to get on Fak@book
break-time ... yeah, that's the ticket ...
Socializing at your doctors appointments, I will have to try that. It hasn’t worked out too well for me at the dentist.
,,, me too. Facebook is used in some of the wealthier middle east countries to trade immigrant household servants once they've surrendered their passports to employers.
No, pretty sure they’re all still alive, just seems like there’s a migration somewhere around that time
Same here, they could shout it all down and I would care less. But they come for FR it's open WAR.
My generation is all in prime working years right now, so I don’t see them retiring anytime soon
Go ahead and block them.
I sure won’t care.
Parents are the ones who should be exercising authority. Do not give young kids smart phones. Do not allow them to be on social media. If they need a phone to stay in contact, a Jitterbug or similar phone will do. Make sure playmates are also phone-free.
Facebook is useful for staying in touch with friends. And where I am, lots of local businesses use it in lieu of having a professional website built. So it’s useful for seeing what goes on in the community. But I don’t stay on it long. I enjoy a few cat videos, & then I have chores to do. :-)
