At the beginning of Project Hail Mary, the title card reads, “An Amazon Original Film,” before the MGM lion appears, albeit silently. Back in 2016, TV’s South Park created the phrase “member berries” to describe how, even a decade ago, so many shows on streaming platforms such as Amazon’s are built around callbacks to the beloved older TV shows and movies that inspired them, such as the many Star Wars series on Disney+ and the many Star Trek series on Paramount+.
If you’re a fan of the science fiction genre, you’ll recognize many of the member berries and tropes that Project Hail Mary employs. However, unlike a multi-episode TV series, because Project Hail Mary, based on the 2021 novel by Andy Weir, was built for the big screen and shot in Imax, it has an immersive, well-crafted production design, and beautiful cinematography. But unlike the uber-woke fair on most streaming services, Project Hail Mary has a real heart to it, thanks to a solid script, and a touching performance by Ryan Gosling.
Silicon Avatar
In Cast Away, Tom Hanks had to emote to a volleyball his character named “Wilson.” In the outer space scenes in Project Hail Mary, Gosling has to play off an alien being that he dubs “Rocky.” Surprisingly, in most scenes, Rocky is a puppet (and an Academy Award-nominated one at that), whose strings and mechanisms have been digitally airbrushed out, rather than a full-blown CGI creation. As a result, Rocky has a real physicality on screen, and thanks to some solid scriptwriting, he becomes one of the most believable — and beloved alien characters seen onscreen in quite some time.
But good science fiction has been able to create this sort of suspension of disbelief when written and filmed correctly....

I am half way through reading the book.
It seems to be pretty interesting!
I want to read the book before I see the movie.
He stole that movie
‘Project Hail Mary’ -
It’s a good movie but I prefer Sci-Fi with an edge and nasty aliens. Such as Starship Troopers and the first Alien movie that scared me so much. That in some places I had to peek through my fingers. The theaters audience was revved up (1979) and scared together.
I wish I had a dollar for every time I watched an episode of either the original Star Trek or the Next Generation, and thought, "take away the overtly fantasy stuff like warp drives and space aliens, the rest of that could really happen!". LOL IMHO they had good tech consultants who knew real astronomy and physics.
For example, to utilize the discovered organisms that can destroy the solar phages threatening humanity (etc) the protagonists need them to be able to tolerate atmospheric conditions on Venus. So they start breeding them and in a remarkably short time the organisms steadily become more and more tolerant of Venusian conditions, which they were entirely unable to do in the beginning. This mimics Darwin's comment that sugar beets had gone from 6% sugar content to 15% (IIRC) in breeding, supposedly proving that evolution could proceed rapidly. But a century later the figure was still 15%; all that had really happened was that selection pressure had eliminated natural genetic variation, leaving only the most desired variant without ever creating anything new that extended the range. If evolution were able to craft new designs as easily as this author imagines there would be new species popping out of every barnyard in America.
The book was very good and the movie follows very close to the book. Good movie I would recommend it if you like SciFi.
I love sci-fi!
Looking forward to seeing the movie!
“The Martian” movie had good tech consultants too. Even some retired NASA guys who helped out Matt Damon, with retro fixes to keep him alive.
You prolly know that The Martian and Project Hail Mary .... both books are by Andy Weir.
I’ve grown fatigued by apocalyptic or post apocalyptic scifi movies...
For a change a good movie from Hollywood. No woke crap, gender bending or ham handed digs at Trump or conservatives, just an entertaining movie you could take your kids to without being sickened by what they see on the screen. Ryan Gosling is perfect in the role and gives an Oscar worthy performance.
reluctantly went to the movie. loved it! The plot was so simple with genuine human emotions, no DEI
Unfortunately the money the studio makes on this will subsidize more woke crap.
And now it’s back to our regularly scheduled programming.
I got halfway through the movie but got bored. The physics didn’t work for me. I read the explanation of their gravity-free gravity, but it still didn’t work for me.
I took my daughter years ago to the movie to see Eddie Murphy's version Dr Doolittle. I told one of the other parents that there's no way 20 years before that I'd be convinced I'd one day take kids to see Eddie Murphy. LOL
yeah they had a tune in there that was a throwback to a spielberg movie from the 70’s. I’ve forgot the name. nice aliens in that movie. so nice people wanted to go with them.
