Oops! He Did It Again
SteynonLine ^ | April 27, 2026 | Mark Steyn

Greetings from Ukraine, where I am growing increasingly enfeebled and have got to get out of this hellish eastern oblast. Not because of the aerial bombardment, but because of the surly Russian waiter denying me the apple juice he offers to all other breakfast customers and the pretty but charmless Kharkov girls pressing in on all sides and offering to show me the town in exchange for getting them approved for immigration to Canada. War is hell.

But it is also, generally, very clarifying. I stood at my window and watched a drone pass leisurely across the skies from right to left, and felt reasonably sure I knew what it meant: it would hit something and explode. And so it goes. The hotel I was booked into tomorrow night was apparently bombed in the small hours so I shall have to seek alternative accommodations. Inconvenient, but all very simple.

By contrast Washington is ever more like Churchill's riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. My conscience is clear. Almost two years ago, it was perfectly obvious to anyone who examined the facts on the ground in Butler, Pennsylvania that the United States Secret Service had an institutionalised level of incompetence and/or malevolence that was assisting those many persons anxious to kill Trump to do so. Even as mere incompetence, it is murderously so: Corey Comperatore is dead, and everyone in Butler and DC who enabled his death still has a job.

Steyn sounds a bit peeved.
Maybe it’s just me.

A scathing rebuke of the Secret Service. And 100% accurate.

steyn writes a lot, and he’s read a lot, but, I gave up reading his articles when I realized that, he’s just another writer with no relevance to how things work or develop. Interesting to read, but immaterial.

Steyn has become so depressed and demoralized (for good reasons) that he is depressing and demoralizing to read.

Steyn is a writer - snarky and entertaining, but typically he makes a good point. In this case, he has nailed it! Trumps family needs to have a “come to Jesus” talk with the President ASAP about his own security. If something doesn’t change significantly and soon the lack of seriousness of the US Secret Service is probably going to get President Trump killed. For example, how in the hell is this most recent assassin still alive, after “several” SS agents returned fire? Are they shooting blanks, hungover, asleep at the wheel, completely incompetent or willfully incapable of protecting our President, the leader of the free world?

John Roberts, the FNC anchor, was also a bit "chagrinned" because of the absolute lack of security at the Hilton when he freely parked his SUV and toted somewhat heavy luggage to his hotel room.

We see a small group of agents yacking it up while Cole turns a corner and runs down a hallway without a glance in his direction!! This is just horseshit!! despite the plaudits directed towards them;

Sometimes the truth is ugly and demoralizing.

Samurai guards in ancient Japan knew when they were on duty. *They* would have paid with their lives for such utter incompetence.

I’m not sure who Trump trusts and he doesn’t trust.

But he is not stupid and going to speak the truth.

Which is there is not really anyone working for the gubmint in DC that he can trust.

It’s not just him but his ENTIRE family is dependent on the SS for their safety.

He has to try to keep morale high for their sake if not his.

At some point it goes beyond incompetence, we reached that point in Butler.

“War is hell.”

“Inconvenient, but all very simple.”

And that is the problem. If it was inconvenient enough, it would be stopped. His nonchalance attitude displays a relaxed state characterized by a lack of concern, enthusiasm, or interest, often presenting as casual indifference and acceptance to his surroundings and/or his condition, one of suffering and detriment. He fails to reach the top of the food chain by not complaining about it to the right people or enough to cause change. His writing doesn’t even reach the level of rave, let alone a rant.
