Mali defence minister killed as country hit by wave of rebel attacks

Mali's defence minister has been killed in an apparent suicide truck bombing on his residence near the capital Bamako.

Multiple news outlets reported the death of Sadio Camara, part of a wave of coordinated attacks by jihadist militants and separatists carried out across the country.

State TV confirmed the death several hours later, saying he died of wounds received while engaging with the attackers. Reports say the head of the military junta, Gen Assimi Goita, was moved to a safe location after his home was targeted.

Further north Russian mercenaries hired by Mali's military agreed to withdraw from Kidal after two days of clashes, the separatist Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) group said.

For years, Mali has been plagued by insurgencies by groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group, and the FLA.

Quoting Camara's family and French media, news agencies said the attack - launched by militants affiliated with al-Qaeda in Kati on Saturday - also killed at least three of Camara's family members.

Government spokesman Issa Ousmane Coulibaly read out a statement on Sunday evening saying Camara was killed when "a vehicle laden with explosives and driven by a suicide attacker targeted the minister's residence".

It said he exchanged fire with the attackers and "succeeded in neutralising some of them". However, he was wounded and later died from his injuries in hospital.

The attack led to the collapse of Camara's residence and the destruction of a nearby mosque, where a number of worshippers were also killed.

Fighting on Saturday had been reported in the town, a major military base outside the capital, in Gao and Kidal in the north, and the central cities of Sevare and Mopti.

Reports suggest the assault by the separatists - who seek a breakaway ethnic Tuareg state in the north - was primarily focused on northern cities, while the...

The French were kicked out a few years ago, about 2022. The Russians took their place, but have not been doing as good of a job.

It is the Russian “Africa Corps” which used to be called the Wagner Group.

Rebels fighting over who owns the sand dunes in a barren, desolate, waterless, shithole African Islamist country. Just like Somalia. Let them annihilate each other. /spit

Wagner is fighting for the uranium smuggling route from Niger. If they can control the bulk of the world’s uranium they can blackmail France.

It is impossible to blackmail france.

To be blackmailed you must have a sense of shame.

Now extort... yeah they might be able to do that.

Mali Coup Leaders Seized Power Days After Returning From Military Training Camp in Russia

The leaders of the coup that ousted Mali’s President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita spent most of the year training in Russia before returning to boot out the democratically-elected leader at gunpoint, according to sources in the Malian military.

The rebels took control of Mali’s largest military base in Kati, just outside the capital, Bamako, on Tuesday before storming Keita’s official residence, seizing the president and forcing him to resign as leader of the West African nation.

Numerous media outlets, including the BBC, immediately reported that the coup was led by Malick Diaw and Sadio Camara, two army colonels who hold top positions at the Kati military base and who are reportedly very close friends. But there’s something else both men have in common — they were trained by the military in Russia.

Two Malian military officials told The Daily Beast that both Diaw and Camara were in Russia before they returned to Mali to stage Tuesday’s coup, confirming a local media report. The two officers are said to have departed Bamako for Moscow early in the year to attend military training sponsored by the Russian armed forces, they returned a little over a week before the coup was executed.

According to the article I just posted, someone is kicking out the Russian trained leader, but I cannot vouch for the source.
