The Trump administration is in advanced talks for a financing package for Spirit Airlines as the carrier is facing the risk of a liquidation, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The iconic discounter Spirit has been challenged for years by rising costs, changing consumer tastes, an engine recall and a court-blocked plan to be acquired by JetBlue Airways two years ago.
“Spirit Airlines would be on a much firmer financial footing had the Biden administration not recklessly blocked the airline’s merger with JetBlue,” White House spokesman Kush Desai said in a statement to CNBC. “The Trump administration continues to monitor the situation and overall health of the U.S. aviation industry that millions of Americans rely on every day for essential travel and their livelihoods.”
Spirit had been facing a potentially imminent liquidation, people familiar with the matter told CNBC last week, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss matters that had not yet been made public. The Dania Beach, Florida-based carrier in August filed for its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy in less than a year, after it struggled to increase revenue to cover rising costs.
President Donald Trump hinted at potential government aid on Tuesday, telling CNBC’s “Squawk Box”, “Spirit’s in trouble, and I’d love somebody to buy Spirit. It’s 14,000 jobs, and maybe the federal government should help that one out.”
The terms of the talks weren’t immediately clear and a deal could still fall apart. The Wall Street Journal earlier reported that the talks were in an advanced stage.

NOOOOOOOOOO!
No handouts!
Better things for fed Govt to spend money on.
That is a lot of money just to be able to tweet the headline “We’ve got Spirit, yes we do!”
But... why?
if there’s a chance for a self-aggrandizing photo op, Trump won’t care how much it costs the American people.
I echo your sentiment. Flown it once. Had the unfortunate predicament of being assigned a ticket during an impending hurricane...
Never again.
They should have not blocked the merger of Jet Blue and Spirit. Biden’s DOJ did that (in 2024), winning a court’s ruling for their stupid argument against the merger. Trump’s DOJ should find a way to get a court to reverse that decision and allow the merger of Spirit and Jet Blue - for instance, simply allow Jet Blue to “buy” Spirit; affecting a “merger” by other means.
government handouts should ONLY be applied in absolutely necessary situations, NOT to rescue a SNAFU-ed-up third-tier airline like this!
(which cancelled our flight despite nice sunny weather without any notice, it turned out they’d cancelled the flights weeks prior......anyway it caused dozens of us to become stranded at the departure airport......cost our party over $2200 extra to get seats last-minute on other carriers)
the outfit is badly mis-managed and needs to be allowed to fail.
Regards,
I am ashamed to have believed the LIES and voted for trump twice.
Soul Plane will fly again...
how about we don’t and let the market take care of things like it’s supposed to do?
La’Keisha, ShaNayNay, De’Yanah, LaShawnda, Sha’Quanda, BonQuisha, La’Quishria, Toprameneesha, Bufanaquishria, TraMishalania, Cha’vodka, Eteshiara, Equasia, LaQuishraniqua, De’Shawnta, Sha’Tanya, Ke’Undra, Da’Quisha, and La’Nique would be deeply saddened if Spirit went out of business.
Because where else can they hold their cage matches?
We have no obligation to deport a criminal to a country he claims to be from. Deport him anywhere.
Do it by lottery on television. It can be like 'The Running Man'.
"Maybe he'll go to Ukraine. Maybe he'll go to Afghanistan, Iran, or Haiti. See what location Spirit Airlines will spirit him away to. Place your online bets before we spin the wheel and find out. You can win cash payouts and free miles on Spirit Airlines."
I don’t think Jet Blue is in great shape to buy it. Stock’s down to a little over $5 a share, and bankruptcy rumors have already started. And they’d be better off waiting for private equity to finish stripping out the value from Southwest. That should just take another 3 years or so.
I wouldn’t touch any of those 3 at this point.
The argument the Biden DOJ made against the Jet Blue-Spirit merger was stupid.
I claimed the merger would make Jet Blue a “monopoly” in the “discount” airline market. There is only one airline market and the “discount airlines” are just a part of it and they compete not just with each other but with the majors. The merger would have made the “discount” segment stronger and raised its ability to compete with the majors.
No more corporate bailouts!!!
