Two Israeli soldiers have been pulled from combat duty and given 30-day jail sentences after one photographed the other swinging what appeared to be a sledgehammer at the head of a statue of Jesus in southern Lebanon, the Israeli military said on Tuesday.
Other troops who stood by but did nothing to intervene, the military said, have also been summoned and could face disciplinary action.
The military replaced the damaged statue with a gleaming new sculpture of the crucifixion of Christ and released a photo of it.
The extraordinarily swift administration of military justice by Israel was a tacit acknowledgment of the reputational damage the incident had done to the country, more than the seriousness of the crime.
The incident occurred in Debl, a Christian village in Lebanon a few miles from the Israeli border. The village is in an area that the Israeli military seized as a buffer zone before a cease-fire with Hezbollah went into effect late last week.
the act of vandalism reflected both ignorance and a growing hostility to Christians among some Israeli Jews, who see Christianity as a form of idolatry or Christian proselytizing as a threat.

But the top comment shows that some Israelis still despise Christians https://x.com/Ourit/status/2046603136270209324

We the Jews faced horrific persecution from Christians for centuries, and now we apologize to them for bruising a blasphemous doll that they say is God. This is so tragically sad
This guy gets the top likes on x. Wow
At least now, we have been made aware that some young generation Israelis see Christianity as an invading religion, not a religion that is equal in validation as their own Jewish religion. I had presumed to much and until now, never considered that some Israelis might feel that way.
It’s better that we know of this potential attitude.
If they knew the OT, they would know that Jesus is the Messiah. In the Hebrew, each letter of each word has its own meaning. The Hebrew word for Yahweh consists of four letters.
First letter means “hand”.
Second letter means “ behold”.
Third letter means “nail”.
Fourth letter means “ behold”.
How the Jew who knows Hebrew is not blown away by that, I just can’t figure out. I know I’m blown away by it!
Very true. There's no way to excuse, sugarcoat, or put lipstick on this kind of thing. The modern secular state of Israel may be a valuable political and military ally, but it is not biblical Israel and actions by it's government and individuals are not above criticism.
It was filmed by another Israeli soldier and he and the others did nothing to stop this act that was done in Lebanon not Israel.
The IDF needs to have at the very least cultural sensitivity training.
Otherwise they end up looking really bad
May seem strange, but it’s actually an act of divine grace...In jail, they are spared from becoming casualties on the battlefield. It gives them time to get some peace of mind and clarity from the fog of war they’ve been in. Prayers for them.
They would also know that, in Hebrew, Jeremiah 31.06 prophecies that Jews and Christians would recognize the Messiah together.
“it’s actually an act of divine grace...In jail, they are spared from becoming casualties on the battlefield. It gives them time to get some peace of mind and clarity from the fog of war they’ve been in. Prayers for them.”
You’re right
Statues of supposed Jesus should not be made.
Every one is a graven image.
I look at it this way, if you take any random sample of humans there is always a certain average percentage of them that are going to be assholes. These Israeli assholes are the assholes at every population has.
If you don’t know who the asshole is in your friend group, it’s probably you.
Note that antisemites are always claiming Israel does terrible things and then lies and covers it up (since they never have evidence to support their claims). But here when a couple soldiers did do something wrong the IDF was immediately honest and transparent about it, and dealt with it swiftly and appropriately. It really shows the contrast between the reality of IDF/Israeli professionalism and transparency and the innuendo and lies and whispers of the antisemitic world.
And we still don't know if the perpetrators are Jews. There are Muslims in the IDF and Christians in the IDF. What is this was an act of iconoclasism on the part of a certain sect of Christians?
🙏
quit your bitching. Lotsa “christians” hate jooos. And 99% of muzzies hate both.
The thing is these are soldiers invading a foreign country. They should at the very least be told not to do this.
“But here when a couple soldiers did do something wrong the IDF was immediately honest and transparent about it, and dealt with it swiftly and appropriately.”
To contrast and compare, look at the perverted sexual deviancy of the Hamas soldiers.
Hamas was proud of the rapes committed against the hostages and some videos showed up on the public internet.

Also see post 22 for links to the videos, if you have the stomach for that level of rot. Not only were these crimes never punished by Hamas, but they may be considered normative under Islamic, that is Sharia, Law.
Need to fix.
What if this were an act of iconoclasism ...
The Incarnation changed everything.
By becoming flesh, God became visible; therefore, depicting Christ is not “graven” idolatry, but a confession that God truly became man.
We do not worship the wood or stone, but honor the Person they represent.
To forbid His image has led in the past to some to deny He had a real, physical body.
It is a Pagan practice, period.
