Zelensky condemns US extension of Russian sanctions waiver
BBC News ^ | April 19, 2026 | Paulin Kola

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned a US decision to extend the period during which Russia is allowed to sell oil despite Western sanctions.

The move means countries can purchase Russian oil and petroleum products already loaded on vessels at sea until 16 May.

The US argues that the waiver is meant to ease the energy supply crunch sparked by the US-Israel war with Iran.

But in his remarks on Sunday, Zelensky said "every dollar paid for Russian oil is money for the war" in Ukraine. Widespread sanctions have been in place against Russia since President Vladimir Putin launched his full-scale invasion of its neighbour in February 2022.

The devastating US and Israel attacks against Iran have prompted it to retaliate not only against Israel and US military bases in the Gulf, but also against energy fatalities and other civilian sites across Arab allies of the US in the region.

Additionally, Iran has virtually shut the Strait of Hormuz - the narrow passage where some 20% of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) is usually transported through.

This has led to turmoil in energy markets, with fears that a world recession may ensue if it is not reopened soon.

The US move to ease Russian sanctions on 13 March was widely condemned by Zelensky as well as his European allies.

Extending the waiver on Friday, the US said it wanted "to ensure oil is available to those who need it" as negotiations to end the war "accelerate".

Russia has supplied and continues to supply Iran with all their major weaponry as well as space satellite intelligence. That’s where their money goes among other things.

All these cute responses to Zelensky, and yet failing to realize the irony;

Funding Russia IS funding IRAN. Are people still this clueless about where Iran’s war capabilities come from?! It’s Russia.

From AI search:

- Russia helped build Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant.

- Russia has supplied nuclear fuel (enriched uranium fuel assemblies) for that reactor under international agreements and IAEA monitoring.

- Russia also takes back some spent fuel to reduce proliferation risks.

He should have settled months ago...He looks like he’s tired of having this “non adoration” power. He wants out...but doesn’t want to say...what a jerk I am. I should have worn a suit.

“Russia is supplying IRAN’s major weapons and intelligence capabilities.“

>>>>>>>>>>>

By un-sanctioning Russian oil for yet another month we are actively financially helping Russia to continue its hostile military and terrorist actions against US efforts against Iran. We are doing way worse than what Obama did when they shipped a container full of cash to Iran…
We are helping our enemies to fight against us.
I don’t think that’s a good idea.

I don’t give a crap as long as U.S. taxpayers aren’t footing the bill, fighting another proxy war with Russia in Ukraine.

Please don’t include me in your responses to others. I didn’t post anything to you, so I’d appreciate it if you’d not put me on your ping list.

“condemned by Zelensky as well as his European allies.”

Zelensky allies France, Britain, Spain and foe Hungary have been top buyers of Russian oil. But most Russian oil to W Europe is brokered thru EU member Turkey and then to the rest of Europe. Zelensky’s allies are not very good allies.

Evidence suggests China is strengthening its support for Iran in 2026, combining increased economic, technical, and potential military backing while navigating the ongoing crisis. Reports indicate China is sending humanitarian aid, purchasing significant amounts of oil, providing components for weapons, and assisting with technology used in military targeting

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/15/world/asia/china-iran-weapons-sales.html#:~:text=Chinese%20support%20for%20Iran%20in,has%20evolved%20over%20the%20years:

The Chinese know better than to trust the Russians.
Other sources claim it is China providing targeting data to Iran...

The good news is that Ukraine’s kinetic sanctions limit Russian sales for any large gain.

Also, higher prices lead to lower sales volume.

“Russia is supplying IRAN’s major weapons and intelligence capabilities.”

One of the things that the US found out during WW II was we couldn’t work two fronts at the same time. Trying to barter a peace deal with Iran and the Russian/Ukraine conflict at the same time supplying weapons to both sorties, is more than we can handle. I would like to see one at least, without our attention for long enough to work the other one would be refreshing.

You forgot China’s role in this:

https://www.cnn.com/2026/04/11/politics/us-intelligence-iran-china-weapons

Beyond direct weapons, China has historically supplied—and continues to supply—dual-use technologies to Iran, including components for drones (sensors, semiconductors) and materials for solid-fuel missile production, such as ammonium perchlorate. So they are in it up to their armpits.

If Zelensky and Putin don’t want to act like adults, then we need to cut off anything to both and tariff the skit our of them until it is painful enough for them to be willing to sit down and act older than a 13 year old. And since helping them in lieu of our allies in Israel is paramount, then they have to go on the back burner. “They buttered their bread, now they can sleep in it.”

These sanctions are financial & economic stupidity.

The sooner the political economic pain is ended.....the sooner commercial minded people can get back to doing business.

Warfare ideologues see it differently, because there is always another war to burn resources on in their quest for some minor victory that means little.
