The European Union’s population is expected to plunge by 53 million by the end of the century after the bloc’s birth rate fell to a record low.
In new projections released on Thursday, the number of people living across the continent will fall to 398.9 million by 2100, down from 451.8 million today.
The population is expected to grow by an extra 1.5 million over the next three years, before then shrinking consistently over the next six decades.
This decline is equivalent to the entire populations of Spain and Ireland disappearing.
The forecasts also show that the age of the population is expected to change dramatically, with the EU heading for a future with fewer children and more octogenarians.
One in six people in the EU will be in their 80s or older by 2100, the data show, compared with around one in 17 currently.
It comes as figures published last month showed the fertility rate across the bloc fell to 1.3 children per woman in 2024. This is the lowest since records began in 2001.

Whether or not the Covid jab has any effect, it was a mathematical certainty long before Covid that the population is going to experience a dramatic decline. The only people having enough kids to replace themselves are Muslims and Subsaharan Africans. Russia and China are already feeling it. The only reason the world population continues to increase at this point is because of the phenomenon of demographic inertia. But that’s coming to an end very soon. Then the decline begins. This is NOT like climate change. This is based on actuarial and demographic mathematics.
What is wrong with people. Or are they lying to justify more immigrants?
