Italian conservatives accuse Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of "betraying" a key democratic ally and handing a "gift to radical Islam" by freezing a long-standing security agreement with Israel.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is facing a political storm after her decision to suspend the automatic renewal of a critical defense agreement with Israel.
The agreement in question was first signed in 2005 and has been automatically renewed every five years. It serves as the foundation for significant security, intelligence, and commercial cooperation between the two nations.
On Tuesday, Meloni announced the suspension, citing "the current situation", a phrase widely interpreted as a nod to growing European pressure regarding IDF operations in Lebanon.
The backlash from the Italian Right has been swift and unforgiving. Pro-Israel political activist Dr. Enrico Mairov expressed deep shock at the decision when speaking to Israeli daily Maariv.
"It is with great amazement and sorrow that we hear Italy has decided to betray and backstab the small, democratic State of Israel, which Ihas been fighting on eight fronts against radical Islam for nearly three years, defending the 'Old West' while Europe effectively becomes an Islamist colony. To abandon this cooperation in the midst of what is essentially a third world war is a surrender of democracy."
The rift within the conservative camp is widening into an ideological chasm. Vittorio Pesato, political secretary of the "Volunteers of Italy" movement, claimed Meloni has effectively "excommunicated" herself from the Right.
"What Meloni said is a gift to radical Muslims," Pesato stated. "She did not consult anyone in the Right before making this decision. We are immediately activating the New Republican Movement of Italy to stop this 'uprooting of Europe' and remember the spirit of the crusaders who stopped the Islamic invasion."
The controversy comes at a delicate time for Meloni. During an appearance at the Vinitaly wine fair in Verona, she also took a public swipe at U.S. President Donald Trump, criticizing his remarks regarding the Pope. By emphasizing her commitment to European religious institutions while simultaneously distancing herself from Israel and Trump, Meloni appears to be pivoting toward a more "Centrist-European" alignment, much to the chagrin of her original supporters.

Meloni was a pretty strong leader in the past. Somebody must have gotten to her.

Italy’s migrant problem has primarily due to their proximity to Tunisia and the fact that they are signers of the EU Charter.
There is a small island south of Sicily and Malta very close to Tunisia Africa. Small boats from Africa arrive there daily. As soon as the person steps off the boat onto Italian soil they claim REFUGEE STATUS. As a signer to the EU Charter, Italy has to give refuge to anyone claiming REFUGEE status that reaches their shore.
The best they can hope is to put them on the next ferry to Rome and that they continue going north to France, Germany or the UK.
The other main source are the boats coming from Albania across the Adriatic to SE Italy. The heel of the boot.
This is the way most of the middle easterners arrive into mainland Europe. Especially, the Syrian War refugees. Again, most of them really wanted to get to Germany, France and the UK. They didn’t want to stay in Italy. In Italy, they might have to get a job working for the Mafia selling crap in the Piazzas of the cities.

She was a firebrand on illegal immigration when she was running for office. But after the election she proved to be worse than her predecessors. I say that western Europe is governed by puppet governments. Even politicians who explicitly run promising to deal with it end up making it worse. Apparently once in office they find themselves bought, blackmailed, or simply powerless.
