MIAMI/ISLAMABAD, April 12 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Sunday the U.S. Navy would start blockading the Strait of Hormuz, raising the stakes after marathon talks with Iran failed to reach a deal to end the war, jeopardising a fragile two-week ceasefire.
Trump also said in a post on Truth Social that the U.S. would take action against every vessel in international waters that had paid a toll to Iran, and begin destroying mines that he said the Iranians had dropped in the strait, a choke point for about 20% of global energy supplies that Iran has blocked.
"No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas," Trump wrote, adding: "Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be BLOWN TO HELL!"
Iran's Revolutionary Guards responded with a statement warning that military vessels approaching the strait will be considered a ceasefire breach and dealt with harshly and decisively, underlining the risk of a dangerous escalation.
Iran's Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, who led his country's delegation to the talks along with Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, said Trump's new threats would have no effect on Iran.
"If you fight, we will fight, and if you come forward with logic, we will deal with logic," he said, in comments carried by state media.
Six weeks of fighting has killed thousands, roiled the global economy and sent oil prices soaring as Iran prevented traffic through the strait.

Trump’s long term plan my be to have an off switch on the strait, to have leverage over China the next time they threaten our medical supplies (like in the early days of Covid), invade Taiwan etc

Be advised that everything unfolding has been “war-gamed” and pre-planned.
Consider it no coincidence that Venezuela/Maduro has been taken care of, and the oil supplies of Venezuela and that of the US can now take the spotlights away from Hormuz.
Nothing that is happening now is chance, dynamic, ad-hoc. The world is essentially in “Safe Harbor” taking down the Swamp/Deep State, trafficking.

The fact remains the Pentagon, who conducted the war games, advised against a military campaign in Iran.
This is the wrong move.
The correct move is to start saturation bombing the Iran coastline where the little IRGC boats are hidden.
And indicate that if Hormuz isn’t fully opened within 48 hours we will start transferring $1 billion to Israel and the thousands of victims of Iranian terror as war/terror reparations. There will be no reversing the money flow once it is done. That will get their attention.

Who’s to say that isn’t part of the plan.
Iran won’t tolerate a naval blockade for long.
Once the IRGC does anything aggressive, the bombing will begin big time.
This naval blockade by Trump to is to trap Iran……and it won’t be a live trap.

U.S. combatant vessels (surface ships primarily, if not exclusively) will soon be using it as a backyard pool, doing laps across and around it at their leisure.
Fun will be had by every overworked sailor: extended steel beach picnics, grilling up sliders, dogs, chicken, steaks, lobster tails, in full view of the Iranian shoreline.

I think the more salient fact was when President Trump took a question from the press during the April 6, 2026 White House press conference about the decision regarding rescuing the downed weapons officer, Trump said:
Not everybody was on board... There were military people, very professional, that preferred not doing [it]... There were people within the military that said, 'This is not wise.'
This was after CIA Director John Ratcliffe, SecWar Pete Hegseth, and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Cain all declared that "we leave nobody behind."
Apparently, there were generals at the Pentagon who were okay with leaving this Colonel behind.
