White House Secures Foreign Steel for Ballroom Project

President Trump has championed the U.S. steel industry, promising to strengthen it and to impose stiff tariffs on foreign metals to shield manufacturers from overseas competitors.

Yet the White House has secured tens of millions of dollars worth of donated foreign steel for Mr. Trump’s $400 million ballroom project, according to two people familiar with the plans who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive and private conversations.

ArcelorMittal, a Luxembourg-based firm that is the world’s second-largest steel maker, is providing steel for the structure of the ballroom project, the people said. They said the steel was produced in Europe, where the bulk of ArcelorMittal’s production is concentrated.

The White House has not disclosed details of the donation, but Mr. Trump said last October that he had been offered a donation of steel for the ballroom valued at $37 million.

“Doesn’t this clash with what Candidate Trump said in 2016?”

He probably better understands US labor UNIONS better now, particularly when they fund campaigns against him.

What “Trump said in 2016” about what?
He is paying for some of it, the rest is privately funded through donations, from individuals, corporations and cryptocurrency businessmen. IOW, at no expense to tax payers.

You mean foreign steel for the bunker/tunnel project, with a ballroom on top?

Ok the donors didn’t buy foreign steel.

It was a donation a gift from the foreign steelmaking company.

Like the Statue of Liberty.

Total bs to criticize this. I hope the rest of the world also made contributions.

The pertinent quote is: “offered a donation of steel for the ballroom valued at $37 million”. Who wouldn’t accept it?

Wrong. No one purchased foreign steel. The foreign steel company donated it.

I suppose if anything the foreign company lost money and the US companies didn’t.

I would take foreign donations every day of the week.

"I would take foreign donations every day of the week."

And why not, RATS do it every day for their campaigns.

Not sure about your 2016 reference but private funding will almost always seek the cheapest source that meets the specs.

ArcelorMittal owns several major plants in the U.S., including the massive steel mill in Calvert, Alabama that may be the most advanced facility of its kind in North America.

New Investment: In February 2025, ArcelorMittal announced plans to build a $1.2 billion advanced steel manufacturing facility in Calvert, Alabama.

Purpose: This plant is designed to produce up to 150,000 metric tons of non-grain-oriented electrical steel (NOES) annually to meet demand from the U.S. automotive and renewable energy sectors.

Timeline: Construction is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2025, with production expected to commence in 2027.

Trump is paying for this. Why not get the best deal on the steel he needs? With all the other deals he has made to the benefit of America I’m not about to sweat the cheap exceptions.
