Bay Area-Based Philz Coffee to Remove Pride Flags, all Other Flags From its Locations

Bay Area-based Philz Coffee says the company will remove Pride and other flags from all its cafes. SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A new policy by Bay Area-based Philz Coffee has some people upset as the chain says it will no longer allow flags of any kind in its stores, including Pride flags.

What started out as a single cafe in the city's Mission District has since become a quintessential part of the San Francisco coffee scene. But after over two decades of building a solid customer base around the Bay Area, Philz Coffee is now disappointing many.

"I think it's very sad. I think it's a very sad decision," said Barry Zeve.

On Wednesday, the company confirmed it will remove Pride flags from all of its locations nationwide.

Their CEO said in a statement:

"At Philz, we have always believed everyone who walks through our doors deserves to feel welcome and safe, and that belief is at the core of everything we do...This is a change in how our stores look, not in who we are."

Philz Coffee says it's removing not just Pride flags, but also other flags and decor at its stores as well.

The company also says that it stands behind it's long support for the LGBTQ+ community.

Rumors of the change have been circulating online for days.

Employees at the Castro District location told ABC7 Eyewitness News they heard about the changes from customers.

Ann Harrison is a professor and former dean of the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley.

She says Philz might have made the decision for a variety of reasons. But she cautions the move could alienate some customers for good.

"What's the experience that Philz Coffee is selling? What is it that makes them distinctive? And the focus on the flags, the focus on Pride, that really has been an important part of what Philz Coffee is all about," said Harrison.

At this time, it's unclear when the flags will actually come down. But when they do, many customers fear the coffee shops just won't feel the same.

"I think it's pretty rotten, you know, if it's owned by big money at the top, I can't say that I'm surprised," said Todd Varney.

Philz Coffee operates over 60 locations around California and Chicago.

I don't drink coffee, but I met the owner of Philz once. He's Palestinian, but I don't think he's political. Philz got in trouble for offering 20% discount to law enforcement. They also got in trouble for banning pro-Palestinian pins on employees, but I don't know if the original founder was still involved.

Consumers are starting to ask themselves if they really want to ingest food or beverages prepared by people with a poop fetish.

Business decision plain and simple. Let the woke run with it. We got the WH.

Even American Flags are banned. Maybe that will change if the manager feels daring enough.

I agree 100% with what they are doing, but if they are doing this in the Bay Area, they are asking for trouble. 50/50 odds that they reverse the policy after a major backlash.

Oh yeah - when I’m looking for a good cup of coffee, the first thing I ask myself is “what kind of flags do they have?” Crazy b******s.

Begin opening locations in places where this decision will not be frowned upon. Close the stores that have any significant impact from the decision, though I doubt it will be that many. Then hold the line no matter what, do...not...apologize. The rainbow legion will tucker itself out and need a naptime soon enough.

I’m curious. Why didn’t they just quietly redecorate and remove all flags and political symbols? Putting out a press release is waving a red flag in front of a bull.

I don’t remember which sports super star who was a spokesman for some sneaker brand, but when asked about coming out against Trump he said, “You know, conservatives buy sneakers too.” And he did not make a political statement.

That should be every business in America. Business is business...not politics.

That is true. As long as the customer’s money is green I will sell to them. I learned this when I had a paper route at 11 years old. Also do NOT talk about politics and religion when you are conducting business. You will just make some one mad. YMMV. IMHO.

Starting? "Gee, what is that bitter taste in the coffee?". I remember being asked to take over managing a telecom group when its' boss was leaving. Staff members advised me not to accept candy from him. The guy had lots of stains on his clothes, picked his nose, picked his ears, and scratched his butt crack. Didn't know his sex orientation, but why risk your health! Especially regarding gays with a poop fetish!

What is it about homosexuals and the gay flag in the 1st place?

Nobody cares if they are homosexual anymore......what makes people (myself anyway) have an aversion to them is many of them insist on throwing their homosexuality in my face.

I know 2 or 3 people that have gay siblings and even THEY say the flamboyant is obnoxious.

Theres a tv show on HGTV called “my lottery dream home”....the host is so outwardly homosexual it’s absolutely ridiculous......to the point I refuse to watch the show anymore.

NOBODY CARES YOUR GAY!

I HATE stores where the only purpose in life is to rub your nose in homo homo homo.

Apple and MS both stick a “Show your Pride” message in their systems. It nauseates me. I want to use a phone, tablet or computer without a blatant homo homo homo message.

Just because a small fraction of the population enjoys homo sex, why must we all be constantly subjected to their perversions? It makes zero sense.

He will regret his choices someday. He’s wealthy and loved by many. That won’t count for much in the next life.

“And the focus on the flags, the focus on Pride,”

Take out the letter “l” in that sentence and you have identified the problem that is hurting the business, maybe some customers will return in a while.

Both the host and guests are virtue signaling (minus the virtue, of course.) I quit watching all of HGTV’s lineup because of it.

I do not feel safe around nonstop homo. But I obviously do not count.

Business decision plain and simple.

Yep. San Francisco has become a majority minority city with a considerable minority segment made up of foreigners.

If not openly hostile to it, the browns otherwise don't give a crap about any of this LGBTQ+ stuff.

San Francisco's cherished history as a gay mecca will soon evaporate thanks to the Third Worldification of America. Something maybe the libs should have thought about.
