Reports claim Hezbollah coup attempt, against the Lebanese state, was thwarted

According to Lebanese social media accounts, without independent confirmation, and a report on Israeli Channel 24, Hezbollah was allegedly planning a military coup in Lebanon that was ultimately disrupted by Israeli strikes.

The reports claim the plan, involving Hezbollah, Amal, and allied groups, aimed to seize key government institutions, including the Grand Serail, and topple the Lebanese government, drawing comparisons to the events of May 7, 2008.

Some accounts further allege that the situation nearly unfolded earlier in the day, before Israeli strikes targeted what were described as operational cells ahead of “zero hour.” The Channel 24 report adds that warnings about a potential coup had been circulating within Lebanese official circles, including the Presidential Palace in Baabda, for about a week.

An interesting report - but is it true?

As far as I have been able to assertain the first mention of this appeared on X - written by Resa Sad

The original thread was in Farsi but in translation it reads:

According to confirmed reports, Israel's historic blow to Hezbollah, which today, in 10 minutes, destroyed 100 Hezbollah operational centers in all of Lebanon, can be considered the result of one of the best intelligence operations in the world, which is even better than the killing of Hassan Nasrallah and Mouschali.

The story is that Hezbollah intended to overthrow the government of Michel Aoun in a quick and powerful coup d'état, take full control of Lebanon, and after taking full control of the situation, enter into negotiations directly with the United States itself with a delegation consisting of Naim Qassem and Nabi Berri, and thus, Israel Circumvent.

Israel, however, has taken notice of the matter with full intelligence mastery, and just a few hours before the coup, without prior warning, razed 100 Hezbollah centers across Lebanon.
Some witnesses call the bombings, especially in the Zahieh area, "hell on earth."
It should be noted that Bibi Jun will have a press conference tonight at 20:45.
The author hereby congratulates dear Israel on this very important operation.

----
One should note that Michel Auon is no longer president of Lebanon. He resigned in October 2022, and after a long hiatus the presidency went to Joseph Auon (no relative) in the beginning of 2025.

To use the wrong name of the president is a small but definitely embarrassing error for a person claiming to be au fait with Lebanese politics.

This post on X spread on a number of other accounts, and other social media outlets, often with the faulty name of the president mentioned which shows that these posts were not independent but came from the same source (whether Resa Sad's post was the first or not).

However, the Channel 24 report adds some context to this story. But so far neither Lebanese nor Israeli officials have - as far as I can find - commented on this story.

An internet hoax, a true story, or something in-between?

It is more than likely that Israel had determined to hit Hezbollah hard as soon as the IAF did not have to spend time over Iran. It is possible the attack by pure chance coincided with and disrupted a coup attempt by Hezbollah.

It would be interesting to hear some comments from Isralei Freepers - not least about the Channel 24 report.

I guess time will tell. Israel has made significant Hezbollah leadership hits recently.

The Hezbollah terror army does not need to do a “putsch”. They are already integrated into every aspect of Lebanese life. Many Lebanese Army personnel are Shiites who identify with Hezbollah. The Lebanese Parliament has Hezbollah representatives in it.
IF the Lebanese people/nation/state ever decide to get rid of Hezbollah, it will be the 1976 civil war all over again.

Israel still considers Hezbollah a threat and Lebanon is not part of the ceasefire deal - maybe they got a bit lucky and saved Lebanon from a coup, but their intel seems to be working well.

Muzzies tried this at least once before. Lebanon made the mistake of taking in tens of thousands of ‘palaetinians”. They immediately started wars with all of the neighbors and tried a coup.
This is one of many examples why no one in the region will permit hamas/palestinian thugs across their borders. Might just as well coddle a rabid dog in a kennel.
