Eligible men will automatically be registered into the military draft pool by December as part of an effort to streamline the previous process of self-registration and save money.
The Selective Service System (SSS) — the government agency that maintains a database of men to be called up to serve in the case of a national emergency — submitted a proposed rule to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs on March 30, according to the office’s website.
Most men between the ages of 18 and 25 are already required to register with the Selective Service, but automatic registration was mandated in December 2025 as part of the fiscal 2026 National Defense Authorization Act.
The change, which was meant to save money, “transfers responsibility for registration from individual men to SSS through integration with federal data sources,” according to the website.
The proposed rule is currently under review by the regulatory affairs office and awaiting finalization.

I self-registered for the draft in 1970 at the height of the Vietnam War. I probably wasn’t in my best mood that day. I’m not sure I would have been in a better mood if I knew the government was doing it for me with a database.
Also helps get rid of illegal aliens, no?

I was just wondering, with tall the damned documentation all our governments demand (except for actual voting), you’d think they’d be automatic already.
My God, they had my son assigned a SS (lol) number as soon as he was born.
I had to go and sign up for it as a teen when I wanted to work.
You’d think if they have it at birth, they’d know and just put it in the database.

Effective April 2026, the U.S. Army will allow new recruits between the ages of 18 and 42 years of age to enlist. The minimum age can be as young as 17 with parental permission. The previous age limit was 35 years old for the Army.
since you have already served, you are probably exempt from being drafted because of honorable service and your age.
My “draft lottery” number(birthdate) from the 1st draft where it was cone was 267, the following year the #1 date was July 9, my birthday.
I ended up enlisting a couple of years later and retired after 20 years.
Why now?

Illegal aliens are here to vote for democrats. If signing them up for the draft and sending them somewhere where they can’t vote interferes with that, then no.
I’m 46, but had a hernia repaired last year. I don’t know if the military takes people who have had a hernia.
Since token hire Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson can't tell what a woman is, no person is ineligible for the draft.
We both served as FDCers and in the age of FADAC when a good SP/4 could compute firing data quicker than Freddy FADAC.
1/2 the men will suddenly become women if the draft gets implemented.
