The frustrating experience of trying to speak with customer support only to be transferred to a foreign call center and connected with someone who barely speaks English could soon be coming to an end thanks to the Trump administration.
Last week, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced that it had “voted to launch a new proceeding looking into the use of offshore call centers.” The agency explained that bringing call centers back to the United States would be beneficial for several reasons.
First, moving call centers overseas takes jobs away from Americans and causes “language, communication, and other barriers that make it difficult, if not impossible, for consumers to get a satisfactory resolution to their problem.” Offshore call centers also create national security issues as “bad actors working inside foreign call centers have been known to illicitly access customer data or information to advance criminal endeavors.”
As a result of these issues, the FCC is seeking comments on “actions that would encourage and facilitate the onshoring of call centers,” on “steps the FCC can take to improve the customer service and security of communications between an American and any call center that remains abroad,” and on “steps we can take to address illegal robocall scams that originate inside foreign call centers.”
FCC Chairman Brendan Carr explained in a statement that Americans deserve better than the current service they are getting from call centers and that the agency is taking action to ensure they do get better service moving forward.
“American consumers deserve call centers that speak proficient English, provide clear answers, and are based here at home – not halfway around the world,” Carr said. “So today, the FCC is taking action to change that. We adopt proposals to reshore call center jobs and improve the customer service experience at...

Call centers have been almost completely replaced by voice Ai... those that haven’t are in the process.
When you get those call centers you don’t know if you’re getting a scammer are legitimate call center I’ll speak with broken English
The companies can do that. There are enough Indians living here to man the call centers. /sarc (maybe)
And stop “Press 2 for Spanish.”
That drives me crazy.
This will be a result of the entire AI replacement of call centers.
The AI can automatically hear the language of the caller and then produce any language.
How about Trump in the scab Indian labor that’s stealing our white collar jobs?
Why not use a Presidential/executive order and get it done!
As long as it doesn’t mean more H visas.
This was a first for MLGW. It was also a call center outside the US.
Call centers should always be a live person with knowledge. Not AI or untrained persons.
Same with phone sex.
How about sending call centers To HELL
And if you thought the foreign voices were difficult just wait until you deal with AI deciding what you are asking and giving you the answer.
This is Peggy.
You have to search Google to find it, but there is an Amazon Customer Service number you can call. Once you dial it, you endure a few minutes of programmed attempts to divert you to an automated chat or other useless options, but if you persistently say “agent”, you will find yourself speaking to someone with an Indian accent who is actually always very helpful and who resolves any issues politely and efficiently.
They are lying to you. There are more than 4 million H1B visa holders here in the USA.
It seems like almost every time I’ve ever called customer service; I need a human on the other end of the phone. Only once in a blue moon does the robot answer my question.
Do this, please!
How many times do we have to repeatedly call back to get an issue resolved? It would probably be beneficial for any company to not have to man 10 phone calls to get an issue resolved, vs maybe one or two if a native-born employee handled the call.
Another common sense initiative back by the Trump administration!
