Asian nations - most recently the Philippines - have been particularly keen to reach agreements as their economies are heavily reliant on energy from the Gulf.
In recent weeks - several Asian countries including Pakistan, India and the Philippines - have made agreements with Tehran to let some ships pass through the strait safely. China has also acknowledged that their vessels have also used the channel.
Questions remain over the scope of these assurances and just how lasting these agreements with Iran will be.
The Philippines imports 98% of its oil from the Middle East and was the first country to declare a national energy emergency after petrol prices in the country more than doubled after the start of the Iran war.
There remains uncertainty over Tehran's claim that the strait is open to all countries except the US and its allies, said Roger Fouquet from the National University of Singapore's Energy Studies Institute.
The Philippines, often seen as a US ally, is an interesting case that could suggest that Iran is "willing to compartmentalise", he said.
"Iran appears to be distinguishing between a country's alliance and its active participation in the conflict."

The “media’s” CHIA PET.
Yeah well that’s the problem.
Pirates setting ransom.
Nations may comply, but it only exacerbates the situation.
,Your pal the D
I really think the President will make a deal, or delay any actions.
The US uses the Straits for fertilizer that our farmers need. There is also the question of how Iran Control effects the use by other Gulf Nations allied with the U.S and/or Israel and world Oil prices. I can’t believe Trump would accept this arrangement.
The Strait of Hormuz lies mostly within the territorial waters of Iran, so “piracy” isn’t exactly applicable here.
Yeah it is. In fact there is no other word for it.
And as an aside, that waterway is equally adjacent to the nation across the strait from Iran. Maybe that country thinks it can “charge tolls” too.
My friends the deadline is 8pm EST. That would be 4:30am Iran time. Who’s gonna be up at that hour to play human shield? Methinks Trump is gonna start the bombing a few hours early-before the deadline. It would be another message to our enemies to not string us along. I do believe one of the Bushes did just that in Iraq.
Starting it at 1am Iran time would give them plenty of darkness hours to get the most done.
“The Strait of Hormuz lies mostly within the territorial waters of Iran, so “piracy” isn’t exactly applicable here.”
The US and most of the world consider it to be an international transit.
We can’t make fertilizer here? We were doing that while these sand goblins were humping camels.
Whoever is speaking for Iran with these Asian countries probably does not have a long life expectancy.
Territorial waters is 12 miles. • Narrowest point: about 33 km (21 miles)
• Widest parts: up to about 95 km (60 miles)
With all the bullsh*t our politicians and media put out every day, we should be a net exporter of fertilizer.
I believe the Iranian ceasefire proposal I saw reported last night included a provision that said vessels would be charged tolls that would be split between Iran and the UAE (I believe) -- on those specific grounds.
Or say he was just kidding about the power plants and bridges and blow the crap out of something else. Or take Kharg Island, or remove the uranium.
Always take Trump seriously but never literally.
It shouldn't matter what the U.S. thinks. Passage through narrow straits like that between large bodies of water is governed by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and the United States is one of the only nations in the world that has not ratified this agreement.
All the rest of those "most of the world" countries should deal with the issue as they see fit. It's really not our problem.
Exactly. There is no way he was serious about his threat to annihilate an entire country.
We get 17% of urea that comes through the Strait of Homuz
Must be part of the reason Europe sold us out.
