Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito became ill during an event in Philadelphia on the evening of March 20, a spokesperson for the high court said Friday.
“Out of an abundance of caution, he agreed with his security detail’s recommendation to see a physician before the three-hour drive home,” the spokesperson said.
Alito, 76, underwent an examination and received fluids for dehydration, the spokesperson said, adding he returned home that night, which was previously planned.
“Justice Alito was thoroughly checked by his own physician, and he returned to work the following Monday for oral argument,” the spokesperson added.
Alito has attended all oral arguments since the episode and has participated throughout them, including for the birthright citizenship case on Wednesday.
CNN first reported Friday that Alito had been taken to the hospital last month, which was previously undisclosed.

Media hyperventilating
Yes, it doesn’t sound like a dire event. Still, concerning.
The left is praying to Darwin and Allah for Alito’s recovery so that he’ll leave when a Dim is in the WH.
My scenario. JD Vance gets a SCOTUS appointment for 40 years. He’s been elected so the public will approve this election season.
Replace him with funnyman John Kennedy to supply some comic relief for 2 years only. Thump’s got us laughing at the left. Kennedy will get the left laughing at themselves-either that or peeing in their pants.
We got a good WH bench.
I know a lot of people who fell ill last month.
Speaking of SCOTUS, this morning, the Court granted cert in Bannon v. U.S.
“The judgment is vacated, and the case is remanded to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit for further consideration in light of the pending motion to dismiss the indictment.”
In February 2026, the new DOJ legal team informed the Supreme Court that they would not be opposing Bannon’s petition to appeal, but instead were seeking to dismiss the case entirely, viewing the subpoena as improper.
The aim of the remand is to vacate the D.C. Circuit’s previous ruling and allow the district court to formally dismiss the charges, effectively erasing the conviction from Bannon’s record.
Bannon was convicted for refusing to comply with a subpoena from the House Jan. 6 committee, with the new DOJ leadership framing the case as an example of the “weaponization of the justice system” stating the committee was illegally formed.
Sotomayor is a Type-1 diabetic who injects insulin multiple times each day. I can see her retiring for health reasons.
Don’t care. He definitely needs to hang it up this summer. No playing around with this. We need to replace him and Thomas this summer.
He is the truest justice. Even better than Thomas. But they are very close.
Fully agree. Justices Alito and Thomas are the best we have on the bench, but they are getting older. President Trump needs to nominate two Justices who are Big C Conservatives like Justices Alito and Thomas, and then the Senate (which only requires a majority vote) needs to confirm them.
This needs to happen before the Midterms. Sure, I believe we will win, but why risk it?
Both men have done really great, and it’s time to ensure that fresh blood comes in that is True Conservative like they are.
Let’s not go through a Justice Ginsburg or a (would have been Justice) Merrick Garland situation in the future. I am sure the Democrats still regret Justice Ginsburg not stepping down earlier, or the situation when Justice Scalia passed and Obama did not control the Senate and his appointment of Garland fell through.
President Trump has the opportunity to nominate two Big C Conservatives Justices that will outlive him and contribute to cementing his legacy …for decades.
No later than 2028. Replace one before this November.
