A secretive contingent of elite soldiers have been quietly deployed to the Middle East amid fears the conflict in the region could escalate.
Exclusive: Australia has sent SAS troops to the Middle East to be on standby in case the Iran war escalates.
A small contingent of around 90 Special Air Services members were sent to the region two weeks ago, sources have revealed.
The elite soldiers were likely to have travelled to the Al Minhad Air Base in the United Arab Emirates, 15km south of Dubai.
Defence Minister Richard Marles declined to comment on the Australian deployment when his office was sent questions on Thursday.

Dear Iranians and Sunni Terrorists! Be afraid. Be very afraid.
In reality, 90 spec ops guys could probably wipe out the IRGC in a few months.
And the purpose of sending 90 soldiers is...?
To assist in securing Iran's enriched uranium?
90 SAS can actually do a great deal. But if I had to guess (and this is mostly a guess) the main purpose, at this stage, is probably to protect Australian sites in the region (we do have them) and also, if necessary, to be available for rescue missions if Australians find themselves in trouble.
Beyond that... a lot of what the SAS does is kept quiet.
Australia is the country most commonly described as the only one to have fought alongside the United States in every major war or conflict since World War I (often called the “Great War”).
This includes:
• World War I (Australian forces fought with the Allies, including the US after 1917)
• World War II
• Korean War
• Vietnam War
• Gulf War (1990–91)
• Iraq War (2003 onward)
• War in Afghanistan
• Operations against ISIS, and others
Australian troops have deployed alongside US forces in all these, and this close military partnership is often highlighted by leaders from both countries (e.g., former Australian PM Tony Abbott and others calling Australia America’s most reliable ally in this regard).
GREAT.
Some of the things mostly political coming out of Australia makes me wonder if the past will be replicated now.
Of course there are many in the US...and even more in Europe...who have no problem with the 9th Century pig fornicating savages in Tehran having a nuke.
A couple of years ago I visited South Korea to meet my Korean-American girlfriend's family. Among the fascinating things we did there was visit the DMZ. Talk about spooky and scary! I had my ID checked a half dozen times by South Korean soldiers...and we went into one of the tunnels that the Norks had dug under the border. Given how disturbing it is for North Korea to have nukes it would be twice as dangerous for the mullahs to have them!
Are trannies, homos, and furries represented? Oz has changed.
I wouldn’t trust or count on them for much today.
“Who Dares Wins.” Glad to have Australians by our side. Good on ya!
Just keep them away from Gallipoli.
A little late, don’t you say?
Waltzing Matilda
Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong,
Under the shade of a collabah tree,
And he sang as he sat and waited while his billy boiled.
Chorus:
You’ll come a-waltzing, Matilda, with me,
Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda,
You’ll come a-waltzing, Matilda, with me.
(Repeat last line of previous verse.)
You’ll come a-waltzing, Matilda, with me.
Where they sent to help Iran, most likely seeing what Australia is today.
....And the band played Waltzing Matilda
As the ship pulled away from the quay
And amidst all the cheers, the flag-waving and tears
We sailed off for Gallipoli
For many, many years...actually,until very recently....I thought Waltzing Matilda was just a song about a guy who wanted to take his girl Matilda dancing. Then I listened to the lyrirs...learned what a jumbuck and a swagman were...and realized that it's about Australians' early years conquering a vast, harsh, continent.
Powerful stuff!
Mossad, Delta, SEALS, Rangers, MEU, SAS, CIA and the 82nd. If there’s a body count contest somebody is going to have a very bad day.
