Judge orders Trump administration to halt White House ballroom construction unless Congress OKs it

A federal judge on Tuesday ordered the Trump administration to suspend its construction of a $400 million ballroom where it demolished the East Wing of the White House, barring construction work from proceeding without congressional approval.

U.S. District Judge Richard Leon in Washington granted a preservationist group’s request for a preliminary injunction that temporarily halts President Donald Trump’s White House ballroom project.

Leon, who was nominated to the bench by Republican President George W. Bush, concluded that the National Trust for Historic Preservation is likely to succeed on the merits of its claims because “no statute comes close to giving the President the authority he claims to have.”

“The President of the United States is the steward of the White House for future generations of First Families. He is not, however, the owner!” the judge wrote.

Leon suspended enforcement of his order for 14 days, acknowledging that the case “raises novel and weighty issues, that halting an ongoing construction project “may raise logistical issues.” He also recognized that the administration is likely to appeal his decision.

The judge ruled that any construction work that’s necessary to ensure the safety and security of the White House is exempt from the scope of the injunction. Leon said he reviewed material that the government privately submitted to him before concluding that halting construction wouldn’t jeopardize national security.

Trump, in a social media post, criticized the trust for suing him over a project that he said is being built at no cost to taxpayers. “Doesn’t make much sense, does it?” he wrote.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the ruling.

The preservationists sued to obtain an order pausing the ballroom project until it undergoes multiple independent reviews and receives congressional approval.

National Trust for Historic Preservation got its panties in a wad. I guess they just found out about the project. Something stinks.

This judge needs to be removed yesterday... under what authority does this libtard POS have to demand that Congress approve construction that is funded by private donations. The judiciary of this country needs an enema...

There is ABSOLUTELY nothing that can be done in this country without the approval of the Judicial Branch.

How the hell did we get to this point?

Even a bill passed by Congress and signed into law by the President isn’t truly a law until some Court, in effect, signs it.

I have to wonder. When will a Judge order a halt to the Iran War?

And just how does the judge think that stupid order can be enforced? It is stupid orders like this that have undermined respect for the judiciary

People continue to demand that Trump seek permission from Congress for everything
What is it about Congress that makes them the moral and judicial authority for everything. They are corrupt, they cheat, they inside trade, they allow a massive influx of tens of millions of illegals. And that’s if they even are a proper authority over the executive branch which they aren’t. They have a single digit approval rating

When I heard self avowed libertarian Kat Timpf say ‘oh Trump. Pshaw. He has to get congressional approval for going into Iran’ I thought - she’s not a libertarian, she doesn’t know the law, and she’ll say anything in order to go against Trump

There is a third party it is ‘the Never Trump party’. They’re like zombies with no decision-making ability.

So let’s just leave the East Wing in a demolished state while Congress is on break, in the middle of a war, until Congress gets around to debating it after debating ICE funding and other legislation, which could take forever. What a great idea!

The progressive judiciary is a complete mess. No one trusts them. They are used as a political weapon. They have surrenderd all respect.

“National Trust for Historic Preservation got its panties in a wad. I guess they just found out about the project.”

I think that was the group that enthusiastically approved of it about 2-3 months ago.

Judicial harassment of the Trump administration based on no law whatever.

After destroying the rule of law, what makes these judges believe they will still be protected by it?
