US conservatives watch nervously as Orban faces tough test in Hungary vote

U.S. conservatives have long pointed to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban as proof that a Western leader can crack down on immigration, defy global institutions and wage war on “woke” liberalism – and still win elections.

But as Hungary heads toward an April 12 parliamentary election, some of Orban’s most enthusiastic admirers in the U.S., including President Donald Trump, are confronting a once‑unthinkable prospect: after 16 years in power, Europe’s champion of “illiberal democracy” could be voted out of office.

Defeat for Orban would reverberate well beyond Hungary, casting doubt on the durability of a political system – marked by hardline nationalism and an erosion of democratic checks – that some on the American right have touted as a blueprint for reshaping Western democracy. It would also come as momentum appears to be slowing for some of Europe’s far-right parties, with Trump’s unpopularity increasingly seen as a liability among European voters.

Opinion polls show Orban and his Fidesz party face the toughest electoral challenge since returning to power in 2010. In most independent surveys, they trail the center-right Tisza party, led by Peter Magyar.

Magyar, 45, has toured hundreds of towns and villages, often giving speeches from what has become a symbol of his campaign: a flatbed truck painted in Hungary’s national colors.

While he vows to tackle corruption and democratic backsliding, blaming both on Orban’s long rule, Magyar’s rallies focus on bread‑and‑butter concerns such as low wages, rising food prices and deteriorating public services. Magyar, a lawyer and member of the European Parliament, has drawn strong support from younger voters, with backers attributing his rapid rise to disciplined messaging and slick social media.

I hope he has the cheating under control, as the Globalists will move heaven and earth to get rid of him.

Earth to Rooters, sixteen years in power is pretty durable.

Magyar is getting a lot of money and support from the EU and Soros. Orban is hanging by a thread.

After 16 years of one thing, the voters usually get tired of it. The policies are fully implemented, going further would be counterproductive.

Most "conservatives" could give two s***s about what is happening in Hungary". If it is from Reuters, I'm gonna take the stance that the story is more about discouraging US "conservatives" as it is about Hungary itself.

Magyar poses as a "conservative" and promises to keep Hungary's border secure as well. It's all a facade that will drop once he's in office and does the EU's bidding, opening up Hungary to Arab and African trash just like the rest of Europe have done.

Magyar is the same sort of "conservative" as Jeb Bush or Angela Merkel.

I’m an American who DOES care about Hungary. I am an Okie who has traveled to Hungary both when it was behind the Iron Curtain and when it wasn’t. I like these people and their history. Sliding down the EU’s path to Communism would be a grave mistake.

Brussels and the Globalist are happily financing Orban’s opposition.

I care about Hungary because I care about keeping Arabs and Africans out of the western world, because America faces the same existential threat from Third World immigration. Viktor Orban has been the only European leader to do so, and he deserves our support.

Yep. And a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

Orbán has built a very effective border wall. So there are no Muslim terror attacks in Hungary. But will Orbán’s successor put openings in that wall? If he does, all of Orbán’s border work will mean nothing.

If Orban loses, he will immediately face criminal charges, like the Conservative in Brazil - Bolsonaro.

Biden kicked Bolsonaro out of the USA, and no other country in the world would accept him.

The Political Left always plays hard ball, no matter what country.

I agree. The problem with new generations, is that they have no real knowledge what thier country was like before they escaped communism.

That may be the difference there now. Hopefully, that won't be the reality. I sure pray, for their ssake, that it isn't

Hungarians don’t want to drop down to a Russian standard of living.

For the last 4 years, Orban has kissed that warmongering monster Putin’s ass

This is the first chance in 4 years that Hungarian voters will have to say (at the voting booth) what they *really* think of that

Stay tuned on April 12th ...

If he does, his own party will give him the boot.

Orban being not a fan of the EU is not a standalone reason for American conservatives to cheer for him. In a U.S. context he’d be no conservative constitutionally. He uses disagreements with aspects of the EU to support his natinalist-populist narratuve but domestically behaves as autocrtic as he accuses the EU of being.

First Spain, then Poland, now Hungary. While we all assumed a right-wing wave over Europe, the opposite is happening.

Yep. And our "right-wing" wave may not last that long either, depending on how we vote in 2026 and 2028.
