The A-10 Warthog handled business and solved what the US Navy couldn't at Hormuz
Survival World via MSN ^ | Mar. 30, 2026 | John Peterson

When Air Force Times reporter Michael Scanlon wrote that the A-10 Warthog had been pulled into maritime interdiction missions in the Strait of Hormuz, it landed like a jolt. This was not the airplane most people expected to hear about in a sea fight.

But according to Scanlon, that is exactly what happened. During a Pentagon briefing, Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine said the A-10 was now operating along the southern flank of Operation Epic Fury, targeting Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fast-attack watercraft in the Strait of Hormuz.

That detail matters because it confirms something the host of the YouTube channel Navy Decoded had been arguing from a different angle: the problem in Hormuz was not just about firepower. It was about having the right kind of firepower.

The Navy, in that telling, was smashing larger and more expensive targets just fine. What it struggled with was the messy, crowded, close-range swarm threat that lives in a narrow shipping corridor and refuses to play by blue-water rules.

Excellent article doing a great job of describing how the A-10 is just the medicine for the disease in the Straits of Hormuz. It can get in down and dirty and knock off the Iranian speedboats.

Speaking generally, The Air Force has been trying constantly to get rid of the A-10 and the Army has resisted all the way because they need a ground attack aircraft and the A-10 does the job better than anything else in the world.

Exactly what problem did the A-10 help "solve" in the Strait of Hormuz?

Actually, the Air Force has offered to transfer the A-10 program and it's CAS mission to the US Army and the Army has said no.

It sounds like we need a massive and clear thought out plan to keep the A-10 warthog in service. The frame is perfect. We just need to make it carrier capable by having folding wings and whatever reinforcement you f the air frame and landing gear to deal with catapult launches and cable catches. There should probably be two on every aircraft carrier.

Another piece about the Warts. Pretty long but interesting also. Love me some Warthogs. DO NOT kill the A-10!

If one is the target, you will be severely torn apart before the sound of the gun arrives.

I’m sure when the A-10 is finally retired, that Ukraine would be very happy to get them all.

Dammit, man - how about a coffee-spitting-on-my-keyboard alert warning?

whever i would take my A-10 above 9000 feet, my flight commander would yell at me... only eagles fly that high, get back to the ground game...

ah those were the days, killing tanks and taking names in the virtual A-10 tank killer game.

Yes, the Air Force has been trying to get rid of the A-10 for many years (decades?).

We should update the design a bit and build 500 of them! It’s a real workhorse in close air support and now naval coastal and littoral operations. It is perfectly suited for hunting down the fast boats along coasts.

It could even be a more practical and affordable way to blow up drug boats.

The Air Force has the experience and the expertise, so why should they not be responsible for the A-10 fleet? Airplanes are their reason for being after all.

The A10 is “green” also. The brass from fired nose gun rounds stays in the fuselage and recycled.

You would not hear a thing heh.

I know it sucks when they roll in on wrong targets. We also had some 18s drop 1000lbers far far too close, missed intended target.
