There Are Now Over 50,000 American Troops in the Mideast
The New York Times ^ | March 29, 2026 | Helene Cooper

The arrival of 2,500 Marines and another 2,500 sailors is keeping the number of American troops in the Mideast region at over 50,000 — roughly 10,000 more than usual — as President Trump decides on his next step in his month-old war in Iran.

While it is still unclear just what the Marines, from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, will be charged with, U.S. officials say the president is weighing whether to try a larger attack, like venturing to seize an island or other ground as part of Mr. Trump’s effort to open the Strait of Hormuz.

The narrow waterway, through which around 20 percent of the world’s oil usually traverses, has been largely closed because of attacks by Iranian forces who are retaliating against the U.S. and Israeli war on their country.

Usually there are around 40,000 American troops scattered around at bases and on ships at any time around the region, including in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait. But as Mr. Trump has escalated the war in Iran, that number has reached more than 50,000, according to a U.S. military official.

The NYT deliberately chooses to use the word "troops" to make it sound more like ground soldiers. But in fact, the vast majority of those "troops" are sailors or airmen.

Also, for those who bother to read beyond the headline, that is only 10,000 more than the 40k who are usually in that region. Not exactly a massive buildup.

The NYT is really irritated that they don’t know Trump’s plans so they could warn our enemies.

Thank you for pointing that out that these are not ground troops.

Apparently the journalists got together in their journolists and shared talking points. The effort is on now in left wing media to make it appear as if we are upon the eve of nation building.

A pattern is all over the place in the journalist press.

The NYT deliberately chooses to ... to make it sound more like ...

The Slimes and the MSM in general are spinning what's up in the Straight as much more of a "war" than it is. Consider, only 2% of Hormuz oil goes to the USA. Trump is trying to goad the Euroweenies and Japan to do more.

THere is an element of 'Wag the Dog' to what's up there.

In our war with Iraq 250,000 to 300,000 coalition personnel were used. As usual, the United States provided the vast majority, with approximately 192,000 troops deployed for the initial invasion.

Iran is no Iraq. It's vast and unlike Iraq, its topography does not favor tank or similar mobile warfare. Unlike Iraq where Saddam relied on a conventional military and was the sole head, Iran is governed and ruled by layers and replaceable theocratic leaders along with their praetorian IRGC fanatics.

Bottom line: If the President thinks we can invade Iran with 50K or 100K troops and be successful, he's being ill-advised - IMHO. If the President thinks we can invade and hold Kharg Island with 50K troops and they not be decimated over time, he's being ill-advised - IMHO.

Countries like Iran that are dominated by fanatical Muslims who believe it's Allah's will to kill us need to be treated the same way we treated Nazi Germany and Japan. Those nations required the allies impose MASSIVE and OVERWHELMING military interdiction to bring them to their knees. Unconditional surrender. Subsequently, those nations were occupied and governed by the Allies.

President Trump may be trying to "negotiate" with Iran. But like you said, the Iranians will call his bluff.

Army > soldiers
Navy > sailors
Air Force > Airman

All are part of our troops.

We should keep U.S. troop numbers quiet as a matter of strategy. Loose lips sink ships. If Iran’s dismantled military needs a strategic plan, their desperation will make use of that information. What we do will be epoch.

'Trump is trying to goad the Euroweenies and Japan to do more. '

It's certainly not getting the Arab states to do more. This Foreign Welfare we push doesn't get much from our side except more spending and more actions. How about the Arab states bleed their treasuries and their sons against Iran and the rest.

Then Iran goes dark at night. No electricity, no water, no pumping of fuel or nat gas.

Yes, but focusing on the total number of "troops" in the headline is going to mislead the average person. And I think that's deliberate.

They culd have used the less loaded term "service members", or just the number of additional ground forces that were sent.

We don’t have to do anything but keep BOMBING!

Trump will incinerate the evil out of that place.
