Hernando County Democratic Party Chair Brian Stewart was arrested on a misdemeanor battery charge Saturday after an incident at a “No Kings” protest in Spring Hill.
The arrest followed a confrontation between Stewart and a counter-protester at the demonstration held near Cortez Boulevard and Mariner Boulevard. Details of exactly what happened are disputed.
A statement from the Hernando County Conservatives organization says Stewart shoved a disabled military veteran who had come to the event as a “MAGA supporter” and then struck him in the head with a megaphone.
“This highlights the growing intolerance and dangerous radicalism within certain elements of the Democrat Party in Hernando County and across the nation,” the letter says and calls on Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried to remove Stewart as chairman.
A 12-second video of the incident recorded by Louis Johns, Hernando County Conservatives chairman, does not present a clear picture of the confrontation, however. The beginning of the video shows Stewart extending his arm holding a megaphone toward another man, who is initially off-camera—according to Johns, this is the moment Stewart struck the counter-protester.
Stewart can be heard accusing the counterprotester of pouring his drink on him and asking if he’s “out of his mind?” He then places the megaphone against the man’s chest and pushes him backwards, though both men stay on their feet.
The counterprotestor, who Johns says received treatment from EMS and firefighters, appears to be enjoying the confrontation and Stewart’s reaction.
“Oh, oh, oh!” the man shouts. “It’s on video! F*** you!”
The incident took place shortly after 10 a.m., and Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) records show Stewart was arrested at 12:47 p.m. He bonded out of the Hernando County Detention Center at 2:50 p.m., paying $1,000 for bail.
Neither Stewart nor anyone affiliated with the Hernando County Democratic Party or the protest responded to request for a statement. HCSO was also not available to comment.
Stewart’s next court date is his county arraignment, which is scheduled for April 27 at 9 a.m. The maximum sentence for a simple battery charge in Florida is one year in prison, 12 months probation and $1,000 in fines.

Florida I assume or Mississippi southern suburb of memphrannesbug
Florida. Just north of me.
Just west of me.
I always thought that Oct 19 or July 4 were no kings day. They occupied an overpass on I-75 in Bonita Springs. One must have had too much sun because 3 deputies and a fire truck were in one lane with their lights on.
Absolutely true!
Not only is Trump President with the GOP in control of Congress, but in Florida, the Democratic party at the state level is in the minority and politically ineffective. Leftist faculty are leaving colleges and universities, DEI is dead, the public employee unions are under stress, and charter schools and educational choice are popular and successful. The result is that Florida Democrats tend toward symbolic protests at which they let the crazy out.
Florida.
SEIU and UNITE NOW! are big in this, just ACORN with dues paying suckers.
Local Dem Chair arrested on misdemeanor battery after an incident at a “No Kings” protest.
Mmm.......”tolerant and compassionate” Dems are such an asset to our society...../s.
I didn’t realize they were also on I-75. I drove past them on Tamiami in Fort Myers. All a bunch of old white hippies.
