Democrat scores upset win in Trump’s backyard for Florida state House seat

Democrat Emily Gregory won the special election to represent a Florida state House district that includes President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home on Tuesday, according to Associated Press projections, a stunning upset that signals Democratic momentum ahead of the 2026 midterms.

Gregory, a first-time candidate and fitness business owner, defeated Jon Maples, a Republican endorsed by Trump and aligned with his policies. Mike Caruso, the Republican who vacated the seat to become Palm Beach County clerk and comptroller, won the district by 19 percentage points in 2024.

“Tonight’s result sends a clear message that people want Florida to move in a new direction, one where leaders focus on lowering costs and standing up for working families,” Gregory said in a statement to The Washington Post.

These kind of election results are becoming more common. The GOP needs to step it up before the mid-terms or we're gonna lose the House and Senate.

Unless Republicans can find a way to immediately reduce the cost of oil, and more specifically gasoline and fertilizer products, they’ll be the ones blamed by the voters.

We have multiple military units traveling to the ME and beginning to stage there, and they’re not there to just sit around. Once bullets start flying and bodies covered in flags start making the news every night, the trouble will deepen.

It will take more than just the oil price. What have the republicans done to actually help with affordability?

Not much that I can see. Affordability is one of those terms that means something different to everyone who hears it. Does it mean lower food prices? Real estate? cars? Health insurance? All of the above?

I guess the one that pinches “you” hardest is the most important. We haven’t even discussed employment and the lack of private sector jobs created in the last year.

And then there’s inflation. Oil prices drive everything, and inflation will come right along with $6-$8 gasoline, if we’re lucky. At $200 a barrel, gasoline could hit $10 a gallon in the next few months.

To the voters:

Did I say I needed to hear anything more depressing?
No.

How could the Mar-a-Lago area go Dem? In the great state of Florida? 😡

Trump has had very little interest in helping the American public economic wise, this is a wake up call to him but he is not listening.

Palm Beach County is actually a majority dem distrct. The county is only 52% white.

4 of 7 county commisioners a dems almog with the county administror who was the county clerk (which is the postion the sitting rep took, creating this election).

The county has not voted for a republican presidental candidate since 1988 although the percentage between Trump and Harris was less the 1%.

The distrct itself hugs the east coast, but I cannot find a demographic breakdown for it.

BS in, BS out. Trump and his team are bravely trying by to fight for us, but they still can’t control the narrative. All the people hear and see are false prophets leading us to Hell. Need more prayer warriors, not corrupted by this anti-Semitic Bullshit coming out of rotten churches.

Low turnout again. It would be nice if the GOP gave people a reason to come out.

Trump has been a Dem for the majority of his life. Why is it surprising a lifelong Dem lives in a Dem area?

Democrats flipped 9 seats in state legislative special elections
under Trump; Republicans are at zero........ as of March 4

Since the start of 2025, Democrats have racked up wins in special elections for state legislative seats, giving the party hope for the midterm elections.

NBCUniversal Profile
March 4, 2026, 10:03 AM PST / Updated March 4, 2026

Democrat Alex Holladay prevailed in a special election on Tuesday for a state legislative seat in Arkansas, marking the ninth time since President Donald Trump took office last year that the party has flipped control of a state legislative seat in a special election. In that same time, Republicans have not flipped a single state seat controlled by Democrats.

Holladay, a health care administrator, defeated Republican businessman Bo Renshaw in a race to replace state Rep. Carlton Wing, a Republican who defeated Holladay by 2 points in 2024. Arkansas’ 70th District is just north of Little Rock. In a statement, Holladay said he learned a lot from his previous loss. “Mainly, it taught us that North Little Rock and Sherwood are primed for change,” he said. “Thousands of people told us that year that they were sick and tired of single-party GOP rule in Arkansas … The People are ready to hold our state’s leaders accountable, and that’s what this election was about.”

Holladay’s victory came after Democrats, since the start of 2025, have flipped Republican-held seats in special elections in Iowa, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Georgia and Texas. When adding in the flips from last fall’s off-year elections in New Jersey and Virginia, Democrats have flipped 27 total seats controlled by Republicans, while Republicans are still searching for their first flip, according to data compiled by the The Downballot.

Democrats say the trend portends well for them ahead of this year’s midterm elections, particularly as they have exceeded expectations in off-cycle contests while Republican turnout has proven strongest in presidential years. This is at least in part due to the Democratic coalition being increasingly made up of high-engagement, high-propensity voters, while Republicans have become the coalition of the less engaged.

That dynamic has had Republicans searching for answers on how to get their coalition to the polls without Trump on the ballot, a problem they’ve been trying to solve for years.

The elections have also come as polling has shown voters expressing dismay or skepticism with Trump’s handling of the economy and foreign affairs.

Much of the coalition from the Clinton and Tea Party years is now deceased. All you need do to confirm that fact is to look at the memorial pages here for deceased Freepers.

Baby boomers are becoming increasingly less relevant in politics and life. The good thing is that they’ll be leaving their estates to their children, creating the largest wealth transfer in history.

Re: "The largest wealth transfer in history."

Not if they keep electing Democrats.

Bottom Line...

Native born USA white people are the core support for Conservative candidates.

Every year - the percentage of white voters goes down.

Every year - the percentage of Black and immigrant voters goes up.

Trump has done absolutely zero to bring down prices. Just like Biden he brags about the great economy. No honest person thinks it has gotten better. Now we’re in a war. Geezer.

Maybe if you’re a Trump things are okay but out here in America, it gets harder every day.
