DHS reports 400 TSA workers have quit since shutdown began last month

The Department of Homeland Security said Monday that more than 400 Transportation Security Administration workers have quit their jobs so far since the start of the partial government shutdown last month.

Airports nationwide are experiencing a TSA staffing shortage because workers are not being paid amid the shutdown, which began Feb. 14. President Donald Trump has sent Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to airports to help with the shortage.

Acting DHS Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis told The Hill that thousands of TSA employees have also used sick days because they are missing payments on things outside the workforce. The shortage has caused long wait times at airport security screenings.

“This pointless, reckless shutdown of our homeland security workforce has caused more than 400 TSA officers to quit and thousands to call out from work because they are not able to afford gas, childcare, food, or rent,” Bis said. “President Trump is using every tool available to help American travelers who are facing hours long lines at airports across the country—especially during this spring break and holiday season that is very important for many American families.

“While the Democrats continue to put the safety, dependability, and ease of our air travel at risk, President Trump is taking action to deploy hundreds of ICE officers, that are currently funded by Congress, to airports being adversely impacted," she added.

The country ran fine before these slobs showed up at airports.

A good start. We don’t need securitytheater by union clowns who fail every FAA test of: “find the fake bomb we planted!!”.

All they do is establish a rules based org (like the EU) and theonly goal is to make more rules. Plus, of course, buy new SiliconValley tech crappola.

Strip the rules down to only essentials.

We need to refund TSA anyway. It never should have been created or DHS.

I’m curious: How do you think airport security should run? Who does it? Who pays for it? What would the security personnel do?

Very likely they were the 400 best employees and they were able to get a good job elsewhere. They were probably doing the work of 4000 that were useless. Thats common in government workforce.

Because of the govt. shut down, they are entitled to unemployment benefits, which they may or may not be required to repay once they return to work with back pay.

However, since they voluntarily quit, that should prevent them receiving unemployment.

Following the last shutdown, the workers who remained on their jobs received not only their back pay, but a $10,000 bonus.

I don't think these workers who quit thought this out very well......

But then again, according to a close friend who was a TSA agent, these employees aren't known for their intellectual capabilities.

Another thought. What is the normal turnover rate for an organization of that size? Four hundred might be slightly higher than normal. They make it sound like a catastrophe.

The rank and file TSA agents without much seniority don’t get paid all the much. They get COLA depending upon where they are based. From what I can tell the junior TSA people can make bank without the benefits by working at fast food restaurants..

TSA is only happy when they are molesting older US citizens.

Why shouldn’t they quit? They are being asked to work without pay at the whims of the Senate. This is not the first time either.

I immediately thought the same thing. For an organization that large - approximately 65,000. 400 is not even one percent. I would think on a normal month they get close to the same number. 250?

Mission accomplished for the left. America is less safe and a bunch of folks now may struggle to makes ends meet. The core principles of every democratic scheme.

Mall security

Beat me to it. I was going to say low paid security guard jobs.
They really are the type. It's not like TSA agents are well paid.

Yes. They should quit. I’ve seen those worthless punks milling about. So out of shape they couldn’t stop a boy scout troop. Nasty jerks checking your ID. Clowns who couldn’t hold a fast food job.

For what other kinds of jobs does their TSA training qualify them?
