As the United States and Israel prepared to go to war with Iran, the head of Mossad, Israel’s foreign intelligence service, went to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with a plan.
Within days of the war’s beginning, said David Barnea, the Mossad chief, his service would likely be able to galvanize the Iranian opposition — igniting riots and other acts of rebellion that could even lead to the collapse of Iran’s government. Mr. Barnea also presented the proposal to senior Trump administration officials during a visit to Washington in mid-January.
Mr. Netanyahu adopted the plan. Despite doubts about its viability among senior American officials and some officials in other Israeli intelligence agencies, both he and President Trump seemed to embrace an optimistic outlook. Killing Iran’s leaders at the outset of the conflict, followed by a series of intelligence operations intended to encourage regime change, they thought, could lead to a mass uprising that might bring about a swift end to the war.
Three weeks into the war, an Iranian uprising has not yet materialized. American and Israeli intelligence assessments have concluded that the theocratic Iranian government is weakened but intact, and that widespread fear of Iran’s military and police forces has dampened prospects both for nascent rebellion in the country and for ethnic militias outside of Iran to launch cross-border incursions.

Aren’t we telling everyone to stay inside?
Yeah, armed Basij patrols in the intersections threatening to shoot everyone dampens fervor while the beatings of the ayatollahs continue.
Too late. Should have done it in January.
The revolution will not be televised, and with the Internet blackout, it won’t be much of it on X
Uh, Trumps first words when he announced the war was telling the people of Iran to STAY INSIDE..so they are heeding his message..besides, as long as the IRGC is still there the second these people walk out the door they are dead so they are waiting
Unlike the terrorists, the US and Israel can generally hit the targets they aim at which are military.
So the civilians are basically under something like a COVID lockdown.
Take out the power and the oil supply to create Cuba like conditions and that will help inspire things.
If you aren’t a toadie for the commies at the NY Times, You sure effin act like it
Sure, get someone else to do their dirty work. Afterwards, if it was successful, lock down the civilian population even harder. See Ukraine.
Whew! That was close, eh, New York Times?
Israel took a lot of those out
Every time they go outside and protest, they are machine-gunned.
Unless you have a weapon to shoot back with, you are not going to win that fight.
I think a lot of people are assuming there is some kind of effort to arm a “revolution.” I don’t think there is. I don’t think Trump gives a hoot about the Iranian civilians, aside from not bombing them.
“If Kamala wins, only death and destruction await because she is the candidate of endless wars. I am the candidate of peace. I am peace.” Donald Trump at rally in Michigan
“My proudest legacy will be that of a peacemaker and unifier.”
Reminds me so much of the Bush years. We are told one thing so we vote for them.....and then they do what they please. UNIPARTY
It took FOUR New Yawk Times dicks to write this antisematic/pro-Iran garbage.
Moving the goalposts.
A neutered Iran, incapable of offensive warfare and overseas terrorism constitutes victory.
Oh, and it will also be a stick in the eye to China. Bonus.
Ummm morons, they’ve been telling everyone to stay inside and not rise up.....YET. We plan on grinding on the IRGC/Basij for a good while longer - killing their leaders, blowing up their bases, blowing up their weapons and ammo depots, cutting off their money and above all KILLING THEM EVERY SINGLE DAY. After our air power has chewed on them for a good while (and I suspect after we’ve smuggled a lot of weapons and ammo into the country to arm the revolutionaries) then it will be time to rise up. Not yet.
Did they really believe that?
Iran has been like a malignancy in the Middle East, and as with any aggressive malignancies, ignore them at your own peril. Nothing they say can be trusted, and there can be no peace with totalitarians who want to kill you and who are actively working toward that goal.
Feeling pretty happy, aren’t you?
Pathetic.
