A New York City Council bill under consideration wants to limit the number of items at self-checkout in an effort to combat retail theft.

Pharmacies and grocery stores across the five boroughs would be required to limit the number of items customers can bring to the self-checkout line to 15. Stores must also staff at least one employee nearby for every three kiosks, according to the proposal.

to combat retail theft.

Uh, yeah, right. These bills restricting self-checkout are being pushed by the unions.

Just open more government-owned, government-operated grocery stored. Nobody would ever steal from the government.

Then, hire more cashiers....

But this is a government mandate, not the store owners' rule. I don't get it. ?

HA HA . Standard prog/marxist response

Every problem they create, needs multiples more absurd laws and regulations to attempt to address it

Self-checkout is a convience offered by a business as a marketing differentiator. Government has no business regulating it.

Isn’t the store responsible for preventing theft?

How does the NYC Council assume that responsibility?

Since it is in New York, and they are about taxing more and more, it would not surprise me if such a law included an automatic tax as a person rings up each item over 15. They don’t seem to arrest anyone for breaking their laws. I am for less government control and lower taxes.

Typical “progressive” reaction to any problem. Add another layer of laws that do nothing to address the root of the problem.

Hey, NYC. Why not limit self-checkout to just one item? Then no more shoplifters at all in your socialist paradise.

Onward the Revolution!
I guess.

Why wouldn't the pharmacies and grocery stores themselves voluntarily impose such a limit? Indeed, the cash register software could even be "tweaked" to signal an alarm if the customer attempts to check out more than the max. no. of items.

If it helps prevent shoplifting, it would be in the stores' own best interest to impose such limits.

“Limit to be enforced by whom ?”

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner.

No grocery clerk is going to tell a shopper “You can’t do that!” and risk violence and retribution by some nut-case shopper.

Actually, here’s an easy answer: My grocery store tells me on my tape how many items I’ve purchased, so...

...Put up a sign that says “Your purchases in this lane are electronically limited to 15 items. The scanner will stop working after 15 items. Further purchases will be electronically delayed by one hour. Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
