A year ago, the stage seemed set for Vice President JD Vance to succeed President Donald Trump as the MAGA heir apparent in 2028.
Vance, just 40 years old at the time of the 2024 election, came into office with wave of support from Republicans and the backing of the president's family.
And while the vice president remains well-positioned ahead of a likely 2028 campaign, questions are quietly emerging over Vance's inevitability, especially as Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s profile and responsibilities have grown throughout the first year of Trump’s second term, most recently around the war with Iran.
The long-term political implications of the war remain to be seen, but Rubio’s rise has caught the eye of not only some of Trump's closest allies, but the president himself, who in private has been noting how “popular” and “loved” Rubio has become as part of his team, multiple sources told ABC News.
People around the president have noted the lavish praise Trump heaps on Rubio, privately but also in public, often starting standing ovations for him and declaring that Rubio will go down as "the greatest secretary of state in history."
The president, however, has opted thus far not to formally endorse either Vance or Rubio as his preferred successor, instead saying he would like to see them run together on a joint ticket, without specifying who should be at the top.
Privately, the president has repeatedly tossed the question to allies and associates about who they would like to see at the top of the ticket, asking, “Marco or JD?,” as AXIOS first reported, including recently to a group of donors at his Mar-a-Lago resort in late February, sources said.

So? It’s called a primary election. It’s the way things are done. Candidates run against each other for the nomination.
How is he going to be President of Cuba and The United States at the same time?
JD
I have to admit that Rubio seems to be WAY more serious than his foam party pics would let on.
“Plot” oh please. Trying to make something sinister out of normal election activity. Some donors think Rubio should be the nom. I can see why he has shined bright and l think he would be stronger in the general than Vance or Ron.
I think Rubio may be the strongest candidate we’ll have even though I’ll prefer Vance (or DeSantis).
An NBC of neither.
I don’t understand the enthusiasm for Vance to lead the Republican ticket at this time. What are his accomplishments? Being chosen as VP? That seems to be more due to Charlie Kirk’s effort than JDs accomplishments.
I’m really hoping now that JD is to head the federal anti-fraud taskforce we’ll be able to see him perform and hopefully shine in the position.
Everything is tactics. Vance will need a VP. Rubio is still good for POTUS if there is something toxic about Vance. Other contenders are in play as well. Cabinet officers, last minute senate or even house fills.
One man will earn his coveted endorsement and for the other man, "You're fired!"
Looking like it’s going to be a Rubio / Vance / DeSantis primary.
Yep. Rubio might be the best candidate in the general election, but DeSantis might make the best President if he can make it through the gauntlet.
ABC fears the Vance.
I like Rubio, but when I see stuff like this out of msm, its sounds like DC RINO garbage.
You are probably right but it appears that he is lacking charisma or at least when he has to go on the campaign trail.
Desantis has a lower IQ than Rubio. Reminds me of Rick Perry.
If Vance does something amazing as Fraud ... investigator, he’ll get lotsa support from voters.
Why does anyone have to plot. I like Vance and I like Rubio. Botha are doing a good job as far as I can tell. If Rubio wins the GOP Primary, then good for him...Likewise Vance.
Trying to create drama where there isn’t any—at the moment. Nothing is ever a sure thing and Vance knows that, as well as Rubio.
Long before the last election, I saw JD on TV for the first time, wife and kids in tow. Walked down to my Repub friend’s house and told him, “I’ve just seen DJT’s choice for Vice President.” Raised in dire poverty, married to brilliant dark-skinned woman, and kids are not-quite white but mixed race. Appeals to a lot of voters.
Rubio would be excellent too. His only problem, IMHO, is his height, or lack of it. I know that sounds stupid, but a lot of people who vote are exactly that stupid..
