President Trump’s allies are planning to take over the Senate floor this week in a bid to pass the SAVE America Act, setting up a major test for Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) who is under pressure from Trump and the MAGA base to extend the debate over voting reform for as long as possible.
GOP senators are playing their cards close to the vest ahead of this week’s marathon debate over the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act, which would require people registering to vote to show documented proof of citizenship.
But they’re bracing for long hours and possible late nights in a bid to build momentum for the bill, which already has broad public support. A recent Harvard CAPS/Harris poll of 1,999 registered voters found that 71 percent support the SAVE America Act.
Trump allies, frustrated that they aren’t able to force Democrats to stage a so-called talking filibuster to block the bill, are pressing Thune to keep the measure on the floor as long as possible to force Democrats to defend their opposition.
“How long it goes is going to be instructive because the point of this is exhausting Democrats, the point of it is pain, the point of it is forcing a public and political process and seeing what comes out of it,” said a Republican strategist who favors a showdown with Democrats over the legislation.
“Is this going to be a fist fight or not? How bloody is Thune going to make this?” the strategist said.
Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), a leading proponent of the bill, says Trump wants to see Republicans go all out and is envisioning an epic floor fight, like the two-month battle that preceded the Senate’s passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

They take so much vacay and so forth...maybe they are well rested.
At this point in time, one would count Trump’s allies in the Senate on one hand.
Certainly less than five, frankly.
Isn’t it instructive, as Lee points out, that the last time it took a marathon session to get something like the Save America Voting Act passed it was yet again the Dems who were the spoilers and it was over the Civil Rights Act. Interesting, when this passes they will twist history once again to claim they were the champions of voting rights.
How many do you need?
This is a dead letter. Thune has drawn a line in the sand. The Administration and the House have zero leverage to move him.
I don’t really care much about ‘Trump’ Allies in the Senate.
I am very upset that the American People don’t have any Allies in the Senate. 90% of Americans want the ‘Save’ act passed. They can’t get that done the Senate doesn’t represent the people.
Good. Please kick the homo Peruvian, refugee congressman, little Bobo Garcia (D-Peru) in the @$$. I don’t know what the boy is doing as a congress leader in MY country.
The Senate was originally designed to represent the states according to the constitution. They were elected by the state houses of the state in which they ran, not popular vote. It prevented exactly what is happening today where liberal mega-cities like NYC, Chicago, and LA from controlling who was elected when other parts of their state were actually more right leaning.
That is why we need to repeal the 17th amendment and give the states their voices back.
MAGA folk I know are in favor of the SAVE act, not pushing for stalling on it.
Honestly I can’t answer that question because I’m not privileged to the supposed plan.
What I’m saying is the term “Trump allies in the Senate” seems kinda dubious to me. If there were five of them, surely they would have done something about the perfidy and cowardice that’s been going on for several months now.
Allowing thune and mitch chao to hold pro forma sessions and not remove him from leadership right then and there tells the tale.
” ... Dems who were the spoilers and it was over the Civil Rights Act ...”
Partial list of Dem Senators who voted NO for the Civil Rights Act:
Al Gore Sr. - Tennessee
Richard Russell Jr. – Georgia (Russell Senate Office Building + additional buildings)
John C. Stennis – Mississippi ((NASA rocket test facility in Mississippi and USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74))
Robert C. Byrd – West Virginia (one of the most heavily commemorated members of Congress in modern history)
“They can’t get that done the Senate doesn’t represent the people.”
As far as I can tell, the only representation the American people have in our government is President Trump.
i wish they’d just pass it
and forget about theatrics or some sort of endurance test
besides, 88 year old worn-out has-been oil Paleolithic era fossils don’t have much endurance anyway so it would be a boring test
” like the two-month battle that preceded the Senate’s passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.”
Democrats need to be educated on this, especially blacks.
Even if it passes, you are dreaming if you think sanctuary cities and counties will ever enforce it.
True dat!
exactly
That’s a misreading of the process. LBJ was the one who initiated the movement toward passing the Act. Majorities of both parties overcame Southern Democrat opposition.
Maybe earn their pay for a change.
