Sen. John Cornyn flips on the filibuster to pass SAVE America Act as Trump weighs endorsement

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, reversed himself on the Senate filibuster Wednesday after years of unflinching support for the 60-vote threshold to pass most bills.

Now, locked in a competitive Republican runoff for his Senate seat and eyeing President Donald Trump's endorsement, Cornyn says he'll support "whatever changes to Senate rules that may prove necessary" to pass the SAVE America Act, a sweeping election overhaul bill that Trump has called his No. 1 priority.

Cornyn's comments are part of an op-ed he wrote in the New York Post published Wednesday, titled: "Why the SAVE Act matters more than the filibuster."

The legislation would impose proof-of-citizenship requirements to register to vote, require photo ID to cast a ballot in person or by mail, and require states to run voter rolls through a federal database kept by the Department of Homeland Security.

Cornyn supports the bill, but his GOP runoff opponent, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, has aligned with Trump in calling for abolition of the filibuster to pass it and criticized Cornyn for refusing to take the same stance.

NBC News reported Tuesday that Trump had seemed ready to endorse Cornyn in the race just one week ago, but that the president's decision is now in "a holding pattern" as Trump emphasizes that Congress must do everything in its power to pass the SAVE America Act.

The SAVE Act is the most important piece of legislation in our lifetimes.

Pass the bill first, and then the endorsement

I think the SAVE AMERICA ACT is arguably the most important piece of legislation in history. So, KUDO’s for Cornyn on it and not doubt it will gain him a few votes. But, he won’t get mine and you can bet Paxton would have supported SAVE AMERICA too!

NBC going all out to help Cornyn. It is a cynical and meaningless offer. Cornyn knows the votes are not there.

Doesn't matter. Unless Thune takes a lead and is willing to spend political capital the SAVE act will never be voted on in the Senate.

If he was willing, Senator Thune could advocate for formal rule changes through the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration, or more provocatively, participate in the "nuclear option," a presiding officer’s ruling sustained by a simple majority that establishes a new precedent effectively bypassing the 60-vote threshold.

There is no sign that Thune is interested in fighting to change or eliminate filibuster rules.

“by a simple majority”

Which he doesn’t have.

Pass the SAVE act first and then ditch ideas of endorsing that RINO Cornyn.

I must be missing something here. Maybe someone can help.

The House Passed it and what I'm never seeing is how many votes are the Republicans short to pass it?

The only # I see is 50 on the Republican side. Then 1 more vote it goes to the President to sign. So what am I missing. Thanks.

If they do get enough votes I am sure that there’s another RINO senator willing to block passage in Cornyn’s place.

Cornyn is an Arlen Specter/Charlie Crist Republican.

The SAVE Act is important, but don't trust someone who is willing to give up a longly-held belief just to get the job.

Once he wins, he will revert back to form.

He doesn’t have the votes because he doesn’t want to have the votes. He is only bringing it to a vote to get the base enraged at democrats for voting against it. He won’t nuke the filibuster because he wants the democrats to do it to work the base up again.

And the gop establishment is only inciting the base so they will hate the dems so much they don’t care what a bunch of corrupt SOBs gop leadership is.

Populism over conservatism - just how the new deal got sold to GOPers by FDR.

Donald Trump enters the chat.

Endorses Cronyin in 3, 2, 1…..,

Don’t do it Don. The very fact that Crony held out this long shows what a complete utter Deep State Jackass he is.

Vote Paxton.

He doesn’t have the votes because he doesn’t want to have the votes...

Correct. This is just another cynical move by the losers in charge of the GOP -- the same people who spent $69 million to drag Cornball across the first finish-line just to get to a runoff in the PRIMARY. Can you imagine?

The GOP-e's primary job is to make sure actual conservatives never take control.

Help me out here...

It is already illegal for illegals to vote.
It was illegal for the courts to change all of the voting rules at the last minute in 2020.

The Dems ignore these rules every single year. What makes us think they will follow the new rules in the SAVE Act?
