This morning in synagogue, there was an alarm of incoming missiles, and we sang a funny song about it in Yiddish, and continued our morning devotionals, laughing at the threat.

If it were just me, I would ignore the sirens most of the time too, but I have my wife and kids to consider, so regardless of the hour, I always make sure to get them ready to head to the shelter.

The issue is that she is worried that she would not have time to get dressed and would need to run to the shelter in a bathrobe. One of her friends had a funny story about that when she went to the shelter in a towel and ended up exposing her backside to the neighbors. Considering that we are modest religious folks in our late 50’s, this is something she wishes to avoid.
Like I say, defy. I spent the whole week working on my wife and son to help them get over their fears. Opening up our safety room casually, to grab my phone, then thumbing my nose at the supposed threat that these flying tin cans pose, before shutting the door again.
The more you turn them into a joke, the less others take them seriously. There is no need to be worried about running down to the shelter. The shower room is probably just as safe, maybe moreso. So just get dressed and walk, do not run, down into the shelter. They have no power over you then.
As a father I have a sacred duty to do everything I can to protect my children. If anything happens to any of them and I didn’t do my best to protect them, how could I ever look at myself in the mirror again?
The likelihood of them getting run over by a car or caught in a driveby are far greater than getting hit by a missile or drone coming out of Lebanon or Iran, though getting struck by lightning is less probable than that. Judge Learned Hand calculated risk as a factor of probability times consequences. The consequences of death as a direct hit in this war are not probable. The consequences of PTSD due to excelerated anxiety are more likely, though less profound in the short term. In the long term it follows them for years.
Furthermore, people can be killed by direct hit even in a shelter. If you saw the huge, honking crater that has been blocking access to Nordau Street from one end here in Haifa you would not want to be in a bomb shelter underneath that sh!t back in June.
The safety of shelters are dubious. The safety of the Hand of G-d is secured in every muzuza in your house. So keep things in proportion. The psychological damage of living in fear are more probable. Sing a Chassidic song as you walk, stepping carefully and fully dressed, to the shelter, rather than running in a panic and scantily clad, and risk falling.
