Poland will eventually seek its own nuclear weapons, Tusk says

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk signaled his country will eventually try to obtain its own nuclear weapons as Europe strengthens deterrence amid doubts over U.S. commitment to defending the continent. “Poland takes nuclear security very seriously,” the prime minister said ahead of a weekly government meeting on Tuesday. “As our autonomous capabilities grow, we will strive to prepare Poland for the most autonomous actions possible in this matter in the future.”

Warsaw will not be “passive” as it also invests in nuclear power plants, according to the prime minister.

Tusk said on Monday that his country was in talks with France after President Emmanuel Macron offered to temporarily deploy nuclear-capable fighter jets to allied countries. The Polish prime minister said he had also been in contact with other European allies, including Sweden and Denmark, which expressed interest in the project.

The next round of talks is expected to take place at the nuclear energy summit in Paris on March 10, Tusk said.

The prime minister’s remarks suggest a rare alignment of views between him and President Karol Nawrocki, who said last month he was “a big supporter of Poland joining the nuclear project.”

Where they differ is in their choice of allies. Nawrocki has favored working closely with the U.S. administration of President Donald Trump, while Tusk has increasingly gravitated toward closer European cooperation.

Still, as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty since the 1960s, Poland is committed not to seek or acquire atomic weapons. Last year, Warsaw signed a treaty with France, opening the way toward Poland potentially receiving protection from French nuclear missiles.

Poland's history teaches it not to be dependent on others for its defense.

I’m sorry. YOU think Tusk is a good-guy?

"...The better culture makes for a better country. The lesser culture makes for a lesser country..."

Poland seeking nuclear weapons outside the context of the Non-Proliferation Treaty is, to me, a different issue than the context of a Poland not under the thumb of the Soviet Bloc seeking weapon.

Comparing violent, nuclear-seeking tyrannical Islamic Iran that has been threatening countries like the USA and Israel with death and terrorism for 47 years with a democratic, independent, largely peaceful and rational Poland which has been invaded and conquered multiple times over the centuries does not in any way seem like an apples-to-apples comparison.

The reality is, I don't feel the same about a nuclear armed Israel or South Africa as I do about a nuclear armed Soviet Union (Russia), Korea, Communist China, or...Iran.

The Non-Proliferation Treaty is another thing. Do treaties even mean anything in today's world at all?

I do wonder sometimes. An oath, even a national one, meant something at one time. Now, oaths mean nothing. They do to me, but many people today do not consider them either legally, morally, or honorably binding.

Considering another nuclear armed country invaded one of their neighbors and stationed nuclear weapons in another, they would be stupid not to seek a deterrence. Finland announced today that they would seek to change their laws restricting nuclear weapons on their soil, allowing Brit, French or American weapons to be stationed there. Looks like the nuclear non-proliferation treaty could fall apart.

No. But that is a different discussion.

Not only do they have the highest gdp growth rate in the European continent, they were also smart enough not to commit suicide by being forced by the EU to accept migrants. Unlike Western Europe Poland has been a dependable ally who has always exceeded military spending levels required by the alliance. If they do acquire nukes, they will be the European leader of that alliance and, unlike Western Europe, will definitely be the most serious main deterrent to Russia in the East

How is it different? Poland, under Tusk, is an abomination.

The EU stinks to the high heavens, and we wonder, “why is this happening?”

Exactly. Poland is planning for the day - and it will come - when Russia decides to invade to reclaim its Eastern European colonies and Western Europe decides that defending them isn’t worth the effort.

There is actually broad agreement on defense between Civic Coalition, Confederation, and PiS.

There is some disagreement about how to pay for it.

Poland is wise. They are 100% safe today with President Donald Trump. How safe would they be in the future with a President “Pocohantus” Liz Warren, or a Mr. “Good Hair” Newsom, or the “Poor girl raised in the Barrio but of rich parents” Alexandria Ocacio Cortez? She was from wealth but pretended to be raised poor in the Bronx. She is 100% fake.
Poland is wise.

PS
Rumor has it that Exxon is suing Newsom after close chemical analysis of his hair obtained clandestinely from his barber. The oil matches 1000s of barrels stolen from their refineries in a midnight theft. LOL

I see a change happening in my lifetime.

Nations once sought the power of the atom.

Now, they will gladly give it to the “great houses” and say, “do not target me, I have no weapons.”

All the countries of Europe sound to me like immature kindergarten children, who puff their chests and talk about honor and dignity and about going to war.

They should ALL lose their nuclear weapons. In my opinion, if World War III starts (nuclear war) it will be there in Europe.

Looks like the nuclear non-proliferation treaty could fall apart.

Treaties are only kept if it mutually beneficial to both sides. If it becomes not useful one or both sides will violate the treaty.

It is no different than the school yard playground.
A. Billy bad ass bully rules.
B. Charlie kick your butt battles with Billy Bad Ass.
C. No one wins but each are pretty beat up and sign a treaty of non aggression.
D. Charlie kick your butt recruits allies on the playground. They kick Billy bad asses butt.
E. Charlie now rules the playground.

Sounds like the writer has TDS to me. Trump would honor our commitments.

Nuclear weapons are a trap. Ask Israel.

Do you want to go to bed every night, asking yourself if you will wake up in the morning?

Nuclear weapons push killing beyond the threshold that human beings were designed for.
