Laser weapons deployed in Operation Epic Fury, as Space Force stops Iran’s missiles in their tracks
NY Post ^ | March 4, 2026 | Michael Kaplan

Iranian weapon debris, blown to pieces or mechanically crippled, keeps dropping from the Middle East sky. For that, we can thank heat-seeking satellites, military-grade malware and radar-jamming software, all made in America. New technology laser weaponry has also been deployed against Iran as part of Operation Epic Fury, The Post has learned.

It’s a Lockheed Martin weapon system deployed on Arleigh Burke destroyers

One of its most unusual features is its layered defense approach, enabling both hard and soft kills of hostile threats.

Hard kill means the HELIOS can physically destroy its targets, while soft kill allows it to disrupt the electronic components of hostile threats to disable contact with their operators.

“The HELIOS system’s deep magazine, low cost per kill, speed of light delivery, and precision response enable it to address fleet needs now,” Lockheed explained.

“And its mature, scalable architecture supports increased laser power levels to counter additional threats in the future,” it added.

Reagan would be pleased that his idea has come to pass.

Battle lasers... where Star Wars meets real life...

A good deal of the battle space is now in actual space. RedWire for one has a system that integrates LEO satellites with drones.

As seen in Moonraker.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pG5v7ng0o4A

Before this was made the Bond franchise heads were nervous because James Coburn in In Like Flint sequel had been to space as a stowaway and they decided Bond had to catch up fast.

A favorite line from In Like Flint. Flint tells the chief he is going to Moscow for the ballet.
“How in the world with all you have on your plate do you have time to see a ballet?”
Flint: “No, sir, I’m going there to teach.”

While happy to see Space Force is as formidable as I suspected I don't like that they've "let the cat out of the bag" before the large economy-size belligerents China and Russia decide to move on us.

But hey - this may well serve as an excellent deterrent.

Nice. Been watching DOD try to get weapon-grade lasers for a few decades.

Wonder how much input power is required. Does it dim the lights on the ship or was extra power installed for the laser?
Or do they charge a large capacitor bank slowly and then dump it into the laser? A capacitor bank might be a little unwieldy (size).
