Mark Carney has backtracked on his support for the US military campaign against Iran.
In an initial statement on Sunday, the Canadian prime minister expressed “support” for the attacks and said they were necessary to “prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon”.
But speaking in Sydney on Wednesday, he told reporters that the strikes appeared “to be inconsistent with international law”.
Mr Carney joined a chorus of world leaders speaking out against the joint US-Israeli operation, which entered its fifth day on Wednesday.
Emmanuel Macron, the French president, said on Tuesday that while Iran bore responsibility for the war, the attacks by the US and Israel were “outside the bounds of international law”.

However, he explained that Trump’s goals are logic.
And that France will militarily help defend its partners in the region no matter what:
PARIS, March 3 (Reuters) - France is ready to defend its partners if they request help after Iranian retaliatory strikes and reserves its right to intervene, Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said on Tuesday.
“This war... is dragging a number of countries in the region into the conflict with which we have relations, defence agreements, and interests, including military bases,” Barrot told French broadcaster BFM TV.
He added that French Rafale fighter jets carried out air operations to secure the skies above France’s bases in the region. Around 400,000 French nationals are currently in the countries affected by the crisis in the Middle East and the French government is ready to fly back those most at risk using both commercial and military flights, Barrot said.
