Kuwaiti F/A-18 Aircraft Suspected of Shooting Down US F-15s

Kuwaiti aircraft are suspected to be responsible for the shootdown of three U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles on March 2, people familiar with the matter told Air & Space Forces Magazine.

The friendly fire episode occurred around 7 a.m. local time on the third day of the U.S. war against Iran. At least one Kuwaiti F/A-18 is believed to be responsible—Kuwait flies F/A-18s and Eurofighter Typhoons.

All six aviators—three pilots and three weapons systems officers—are alive, were recovered safely, and are in stable condition, U.S. military officials said.

U.S. Central Command declined comment on the suspected role of the Kuwaiti planes. “It would be inappropriate to comment given the incident is under investigation,” said Navy Capt. Tim Hawkins.

So maybe it wasn't H1B missile defense controllers on the ground.

Blue on blue is always a real challenge. Its happened before even between US forces when we were not even at war. Mixing with foreign forces on short notice with bullets flying just makes it harder.

Unfortunate, but this will get sorted.

Kuwatis, not smart enough to maintain a F18. Looks like their IQ is too low to fly them too. Too much marrying of cousins in their history.

This is outrageous. If the Kuwaiti pilot had visual contact, he had to be a complete moron to not realize it was American. Iran has NO F-15s.

Two of the three Weapons Control Officers on the three jets were women. Women make up a very small number of WSOs so the likelyhood of two of them getting shot down at the same time is remote. Unless they were squaking (signaling) the wrong mode and sent out an enemy mode to the attacking jet or gound forces. There is an interesting article somewhere today wondering if women who washed out as pilots were simply moved to the back seat to be WCOs and are now screwing that up. Or did the Kuwaiti pilot know exactly what he was doing?

That does happen in the Air Force. Some that washed out of pilot training go to Nav school..

Ward Carroll has a good discussion of it here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cb7R1xEZBI

He speculates that the F-18 pilot mistook the F-15s for Mig-29s.

Still ridiculous. Maybe mistakes on both sides.

The pilot had to be an idiot. Why in the world would Russian Mig29s be there? There would be intelligence briefs to make that known..

That’s an important point. But all three were not squawking the coordinated IFF code? Seems unlikely.

Iran flies Mig-29s...

Still a huge error.

Need to bring out Ian Flemming for this one.
