NEWS | BAY AREA & STATE Newsom blames kratom for 27 deaths as California seizes millions in products
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | March 3, 2026 | By Lester Black

Kratom pills and drinks have been openly sold across California for years, but a recent crackdown by Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration is shutting down the sale of the popular painkillers, resulting in over 3,300 products seized in three weeks and $5 million worth of product taken off shelves.

This could create a little family friction

Paul Pelosi Jr., son of former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, has been a prominent advocate for keeping kratom legal in the United States, acting as a consultant for the American Kratom Association.

Key points regarding the connection between Paul Pelosi Jr. and kratom include: Lobbying Efforts: In 2016, Paul Pelosi Jr. led efforts to prevent the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) from banning kratom, arguing against classifying it as a Schedule I substance. American Kratom Association: He has served as a consultant/executive director for the American Kratom Association, which advocates for the safety and legality of the herbal substance. Stance: Pelosi Jr. has argued that kratom should be "saved" and regulated rather than banned, focusing on its use as a natural alternative for pain management

For once, I agree with Gov. Gavin about the ruinous dangers of Kratom. I didn’t realize it had become so commonly used in the U.S.

**Of all things to advocate and lobby for, Paul Pelosi wants to ‘keep kratom legal in the United States’???!!
I have seen (photos of) the rotting away of body parts due to this drug. It’s horrible.
Paul Jr. is nothing more than a well dressed Scum-ball! Disgraceful and detached from humanity.”Frankly, people of California, I don’t give a damn!”

27 deaths

How many bodies are picked up off the streets in Kali every day, due to meth and fentanyl, Navin?

Low hanging fruit.

I know someone who works with Kratom: He told me all deaths are from SYNTHESIZED Kratom while no negative effects happened with NATURAL Kratom, but the govt. is throwing out the baby with the bathwater

What is it with Californians and ingesting drugs they know little or nothing about? I’ve never heard of this Krayola stuff but I’m not in the practice of shoving things into my body that hasn’t been FDA tested. Now that I know the Pelosis are behind it, let’s get this “herbal alternative” a proper burial.

So marijuana, which makes people violent*, stupid and lazy, is actively supported by the government of California.

But Kratom is not.

I’m OK with the state doing what it can to reduce Kratom use, but simply banning a highly addictive substance... have we learned nothing from our experience with alcohol, opiates, etc.? You really want to establish a massive kratom-smuggling industry? Isn’t that exactly why the marijuana legalization movement argued pot should be legal?

How about Kratom dispensaries? Or a label warning, “WARNING: This product contains kratom, a highly addictive substance.”

*Yes it does. Shut up all you potheads; the fact that it makes you feel lazy and apathetic does not mean it can’t make people violent. It destroys inhibition without incapacitating making potheads way more dangerous than even drunkards.

When you say “works with Kratom,” do you mean someone who conducts experimental research with Kratom, someone trying to promote its usage, or someone who has become addicted? My understanding is that synthesized kratom is much more concentrated in 7-OH, so I can imagine that when someone is in their final states of addiction, they may prefer synthesized kratom, but that hardly vindicates natural kratom unless you were to demonstrate some reason why natural kratom is substantially less addictive per effective dose.

How out of touch am I!

I know the word. See it boldly displayed on “smoke shops” all over town.
I assumed it was just a popular brand of cartridges for e-cigarettes.

Probably just the tip of the iceberg regarding my ignorance of popular culture today.

Kratom just makes you feel bad. It’s not anything like morphine you get after surgery. I tried it when I was tapering off morphine after being run over and nearly killed.

It's a stupid question. Do really you think any news reports actually specify whether the overdose was natural or "synthetic?" Do you really think the medical examiner can even *know* whether it was natural or synthetic? Let's say they find 100 bottles of natural kraton in the guy's home; do we know what killed him wasn't the one synthetic one he tried without realizing it was more potent? If we find 100 bottles of synthetic kraton, do we know he didn't overdose on natural kraton in the mistaken belief that 7 times less OH meant 7 times less dangerous?

If Newsom and the Legislature would just put a nice big tax on the Kratom like they do marijuana, the 27 deaths (or even a hundred times that), would be of no concern to them.

Honestly what real difference will it make? In a month there will be a new drug and one after that and so on. The soul of the young of this nation (and some the old souls as well) have been polluted, twisted and perverted beyond recognition. Those that want to get high will find a way to get high.

In my area, almost every gas station advertises that they sell Kratom.

It is a well-known fact that the best quality and highest purity drugs known to man are sold in gas stations. Anyone with even three working brain cells should know to avoid this stuff.

I recall back in 2012, when Bath Salts were thought to be one drug that made one homeless man (Rudy Eugene) chew most of the face off of another homeless guy( Ronald Poppo).
It was discovered that Bath Salts were readily available at most Gas Station stores.
