Road Trip: Naval Air Station Meridian, Mississippi

MSnasmeridian2

Naval Air Station Meridian or NAS Meridian is a military airport located 11 miles northeast of Meridian, Mississippi in Lauderdale County and Kemper County, and is one of the Navy's two jet strike pilot training facilities.

The Air Operations Department employs 230 military and civilian personnel to operate NAS Meridian/McCain Field and Naval Outlying Landing Field (NOLF) Joe Williams. Their primary mission is to support Commander, Training Air Wing ONE, the wing's subordinate training squadrons and its associated T-45 Goshawk aircraft in the conduct of undergraduate strike pilot training.

Additional services are furnished to support operations for NAS and transient military aircrews. Air Traffic Control Division operates the control tower and radar final control systems. They provide flight planning services and issue clearances and instructions to pilots for all phases of military flight operations within the vicinity of the airport.

MSnasmeridian5

NAS Meridian maintains a separate runway, Joe Williams Outlying Landing Field (OLF), approximately 25 miles northwest of the main air station. Joe Williams OLF is an 8,000 foot long runway located in a rural area between the communities of Bogue Chitto and De Kalb. The field is used to reduced traffic congestion at the main air station, primarily when students are conducting Field Carrier Landing Practice in preparation for initial aircraft carrier qualification.

MATSS-1 provides administrative support for instructor pilots and Marine Corps Student Naval Aviators assigned to attend school at Training Air Wing One. MATSS-1 is the recipient of the National Defense Service Streamer with two Bronze Stars as well as the Global War on Terrorism Service Streamer. In November 2013, MATSS-1 dedicated the Marine Obstacle Course to Cpl. Sylvester Hood Sr., a Montford Point Marine and Meridian native.

Howdy, lauren. *HUGZ*

Is your part of TX roasting like the SW area is? If so, I feel for ya. Just too soon for summertime temps.

Too soon for our temps, too, but at least they’re comfy spring temps.

Sounds like you’re having similar weather to ours. Nice and spring-like. The rest of this week is going to be VERY nice.
There’s rain in the forecast but not enough to get excited about at this point. We need it bad.

I hope your week’s a good one and not TOO busy.

Ooooo, not shabby at all for y’all. Nice spring temps.

We have 70s and maybe a couple of low 80s this week. Bordering on too warm but it sure beats the 20s and 30s we had just a week or so ago!

I figured MS Pac-Man was being kept busy. LOL Who’s better, you or your son? :-)

All’s well down here. The kittehs have been rambunctious the past couple of days, as always right before the full moon. They’re all napping at the moment, getting ready for the night races through the house. LOL

Hey there, radu!

It got up to 83. A little better but still too warm for this time of year. But never fear, tomorrow will be worse. 87 again. Bah!

Did you get any rain today. I had my fingers crossed.

Whew! That’s just crazy.
Our temps this week are, too, but not as bad. We should be in the upper 50s but will have upper 70s, with a couple of days in the low 80s. Our lows will be upper 50s.

I had a few drops on the windshield when I was out running errands this afternoon and that was it. Might get rain later this week but chances aren’t very high.

Indeed, you’ll find out how crazy it is when your temps reach the low 80s. LOL! Or maybe you’ll enjoy them.....I know what comes next. Summer. 😫

Sorry you didn’t get more than a sprinkle. I wish both of us would get a nice soaking rain. We’re soooo dry right now.

I’ll most like;y have to turn the AC on. If it’s cloudy, I MIGHT be able to get by with just the fan but if the sun’s out, it’s AC time.

It’s dry and the air of full of dust kicked up by farmers prepping their fields. I hoped to see the line-up of planets the other evening but could only see Venus, and it was a bit dim. Not a cloud in the sky but the sky was blood-red quite high above the horizon at sunset - - dirty air. blech!
