Panicked Dems fear ‘zombie campaigns’ will see California elect a Republican governor
New York Post ^ | Feb. 21, 2026 | Josh Koehn

California Democrats are panicking as a crowded and uninspiring field of gubernatorial candidates is raising the real possibility two Republicans to advance out of the June primary.

The prospect of the “zombie campaigns” leading to a Republican governor for the first time since Arnold Schwarzenegger left office in 2011 has created a “sh—show,” one Democratic state legislator told The Post.

“I’ve never seen a big race like this before,” the legislator said. “And I am worried that we’re going to have two really whacko Republicans.”

As hundreds gathered this weekend for the California Democratic Party convention in San Francisco, another state legislator took aim at the rudderless leadership of the Democratic Party under chair Rusty Hicks, who has said he has no intention of leaning on candidates to bow out. Only the top two candidates — regardless of party affiliation — will emerge out of what’s called a jungle primary to run in the general election in November.

“You would think the party chair would be actively doing something to prevent a catastrophe,” a second state legislator told The Post.

No chance, the rats have welded the door shut. There is no way they will allow a Republican win. The Dems control every aspect of the process.

Well, you can always run “Woke Salad Kammi” again. Tiny Timmy Tampon is surely ready to go right now. He’s got millions to spend this time.

I don’t disagree with this analysis but the fact is that the dem candidates are a bunch of spuds. Steyer the best one to potentially break out, Becuase he has more money that the almighty and is pouring it in, but still stuck at 9%.

Joe Biden will be the first to tell you that your “friends” in the party of love won’t hesitate for an instant to shiv you right between the shoulder blades if it suits their political purposes. So I cant help but think the party elite will chainsaw the also-rans shortly, and I’d be surprised if one of the front runners can at least make it to second spot in the jungle primary.

But look at the bright side: I don’t think Swalwell is going to be the breakout candidate. Which means no matter what happens we’ll be rid of him in Congress

California Democrats created this system, thinking it would ensure that a Republican would never again be on the ballot.

Now that it may backfire, they will change all of the rules again.

Don’t quit without a fight. Republican states can stop this with anti-cheating legislation and a rock solid refusal to acknowledge crooked elections.

“The Dems control every aspect of the process.”

If it comes to the possibility, they just won’t let one run. The Top Two Candidates Open Primary Act, which took effect January 1, 2011, requires that all candidates for a voter-nominated office be listed on the same ballot. Previously known as partisan offices, voter-nominated offices are state legislative offices, U.S. congressional offices, and state constitutional offices. Only the two candidates receiving the most votes—regardless of party preference—move on to the general election regardless of vote totals. The republicans can be shut out.

It goes without saying that Kalifornia is in dire need of a Republican governor but it has to be the right Republican in order to turn Kalifornia back to California.

Come on. All we can hope for is the republican voters to split their votes EVENLY between the 2 republican candidates. The message has to get out. It’s doable as long as the democrats running are too ego driven to drop out.

Not much Republicans can do about the rigged Ca election apparatus. I don’t think there is any chance they would not seat a Ca Senator or Rep. They do not have the stones to do it.

The Dem party bosses know they will manipulate the results electronically as necessary for their selected candidates to “win”. There will be mysterious, vast, differences between polling and the official results; the media will pretend not to know why.

The talk radio circuit and like media would really have to get on the ball with this...they have been asleep at the switch the last several years when it comes to special and off year elections.

But even then it is a long shot as the Democrats are seeing this months in advance and will almost certainly organize to convince their voters to coalesce around a couple of candidates to avoid this. The Republican “leads” are with 17% and 15% total support for each candidate, so that is hardly insurmountable...

I’ve said this a number of times before, but conservatives should just all start running as Democrats statewide and campaign on the issues rather than party label - render it a nonpartisan ballot.
