MARION COUNTY, Fla. — Tragic and shocking is what Lt. Paul Bloom of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office called the abuse that claimed the life of a 3-year-old girl in Marion County this week.
He was briefing reporters on what he described as cruel and deadly abuse of Paisley Brown inside the home where she lived in Citra, north east of Ocala.
“What we learned was, this child was punished,” Bloom said.
Jeroen Jarrel Coombs, 32, who was described in arrest records as the “primary caretaker” of children in the home, is now charged with aggravated child abuse, but is expected to face other charges.
He was babysitting five children, ages 1 through 9, while Paisley's mother was running errands.
Detectives say the mother told them she was on the phone with Coombs about an hour before he called 911, and she could hear her daughter say in the background, "I love you, mommy."
That was the last time she heard her daughter's voice.
According to the arrest affidavit, Coombs called the girl's mother less than 30 minutes later and said Paisley "appeared to stop breathing."
When she got home, she saw Paisley limp in her high chair and screamed, "My baby is gone!" Another witness tried CPR while Coombs called 911.
Under questioning, detectives say he "admitted to having caused the injuries that led to the (girl's) death."
He said to punish her for reaching into her diaper, he would "bind the (girl's) hands" and "her legs together with blue painter tape." Investigators also spoke with some of the other children, with one saying, "(Coombs) took his fist and was punching (Paisley) to shut up. He had slammed Paisley against the wall."
While Coombs was described by detectives as cooperative, he said little else except this, according to Bloom, “His words to our detectives was very understated. He said I went too far. I took it too far. And we couldn't agree with him more.”
Coombs' criminal history includes convictions for battery in 2019 and for battery domestic violence in 2020. In both cases, the mother of at least one of his children was the victim, and he received one year of probation for each conviction.
The 3-year-old girl's mother is also being investigated by detectives to see if she contributed to, or was aware of, and should have reported, abuse in this home. A judge ordered Coombs be held in the county jail without bond.

Yesiree. Them.
I’ve never heard the expression “striking to death.”
I’ve heard “beating to death,” and “clubbing to death.”
Should be and will be are two different things. I agree with you but the world is totally effed up.
How many more deaths before the world can admit the truth.
They are not the same.
ohhh, I don’t think you want to go there.
No way, couldn’t be, he looks so nice and all.
Honestly, I believe the mother has some culpability here as well. I find it very hard to believe she had no idea of this person’s violent tendencies.
Nah. Methed out is methed out. Black, white, brown, give ‘em enough drugs or booze and they can all be child killers.

Why, if I was looking for a caretaker for my precious children, the search would end when Jeroen here applied! For sure. Not.
What the hell is going through these baby mommas’ minds??!? Do they HAVE minds?
Perhaps this rabid animal did this with his paws instead of yielding a weapon, either way he’ll feel what it’s like as the other prisoners ‘teach’ him.
This is a child molester, I'm betting.
