Few things in Washington, D.C., generate as much as excitement and intrigue as a Supreme Court confirmation showdown. For decades, since the eponymous "borking" of then-Supreme Court nominee Bob Bork in 1987, political battles surrounding the membership of the nation's high court have been among the most contentious and raucous of Beltway affairs. Which is why it's rather curious that very few outside the most fervid of court-watchers seem to be discussing the distinct possibility that there could be one or two Supreme Court vacancies after the current term ends this summer.
Justice Samuel Alito is 75 years old -- and will be 76 by the end of this term. Justice Clarence Thomas is 77 years old -- and will be 78 by term's end. Alito just celebrated 20 years of service on the high court, and Thomas would mark 35 years of service this October -- nice round numbers. Alito has a forthcoming book set for release this October, around the start of the next Supreme Court term. That isn't anywhere near dispositive -- Justice Amy Coney Barrett published a book last September, and Justice Neil Gorsuch has released two books since he was confirmed to the court in 2017 -- but it has certainly fed speculation.
Thomas and Alito are, by some order of magnitude, the two most principled conservative justices currently sitting on the high court. It stands to reason that they would like to be replaced by ideological fellow travelers -- something that likely requires a likeminded president and a likeminded U.S. Senate majority.

That would be nice.
The wise Latino may be younger, but she was hauled off three times in an ambulance during Trump’s first term I have read.
It Alito had a sneezing fit the left would be screaming for him to retire.
😑
We can only hope.
The leftist wet dream. Alito and Thomas are brilliant Constitional analyst. The left killed Scalia(in my opinion) who was the best at analyzing the Constitution. After those Judges the rest are clowns. IMO
“Justice Samuel Alito is 75 years old — and will be 76 by the end of this term. Justice Clarence Thomas is 77 years old — and will be 78 by term’s end.”
.
Oh, to be 78 again...
That Bork got borked is such a terrible tragedy.
Let’s hope and pray so.
I greatly appreciate the incredibly fine service that Thomas and Alito have provided to this nation. I sincerely hope they are able to hold on, and continue in that service, but, everyone eventually reaches an age where it becomes difficult to continue working. I will simply trust their excellent judgement in that regard, but do have some concerns about what may happen if they hold on past 2028.
Unless they know they have health problems, I expect neither Thomas nor Alito to resign at the end of the term. Many of them aim to serve on the court until they reach 90, like Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. and John Paul Stevens. We’d like to have them replaced by conservatives, but not all judges can be trusted to vote conservative. Amy Conehead is an obvious example of a justice who consistently disappoints us.
President Trump, please don’t take any phone calls from Leonard Leo.
It would really be better if Thomas and Alito retired and President Trump got to nominate 2 rock ribbed Young Originalists to replace them. Do not repeat RBG’s mistake.
Also.....gosh....I hope a certain thing does not happen to the Wide Latina what with her diabetes and all......
