Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison vowed to fire two police officers for contacting Customs and Border Patrol amid traffic stops, which is in violation of the department’s policy.
Bettison shared at last week’s Board of Police Commissioners meeting that one of the officers allegedly called CBP requesting translation services and another to report a suspected illegal immigrant. The two officers have been suspended amid Bettison’s request to the Board that they be terminated.
The Police Chief is backed by the leaders of the Democrat-run city in his decision. Mayor Mary Sheffield’s spokesperson shared with local Detroit news, that the police officers violated its longstanding policy of not cooperating with federal immigration authorities.
"This administration will reinforce the long-standing policy that the Detroit Police Department does not, in any way, engage in federal immigration enforcement," John Roach, the mayor’s media relations director, said.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) applauded Bettison’s efforts to fire the officers, saying it's important in order to preserve “trust.” She’s been vocally outspoken against immigration authorities' growing presence in Motor City.
"Chief Bettison and I agree that we need to make sure that our community and our residents trust the people who are trying to keep us safe," Tlaib said.
While the officers may have violated city policy, Retired DPD assistant chief Steve Dolunt questioned if terminating the officers was the right call.
"To contact Border Patrol? No, that’s against policy," Dolunt said.
"That being said, there have been a lot more egregious things that have occurred in the police department and people have not been terminated." Amid Bettison’s push to terminate the officers, immigration enforcement efforts have been ramping up in Detroit.

hate to say this, but its gonna take another 9-11 style attack to wake everybody up.
People might want to start giving Caucasian males a second look when choosing these “first responder and law enforcement” slots. I think all the “historical firsts” have been sufficiently covered.
She beclowns herself. To her, trust is deceiving the public who pays her salary by ordering law enforcement officers to ignore the laws concerning illegal alien invaders.

Something I hate to say, too many women of similar political backgrounds acting in leadership positions is potentially very destructive to a law and order society, due to decisions being based on a false sense of ‘fairness’. I hate to say that, because I have several women in my family life, who I love and respect, but I stand by my theory.
You can’t just allow law enforcement to go around enforcing laws. That would be crazy.

Of course that’s only true if you’re a proponent of “police as public safety servants”.
If the purpose of the police is political enforcement, then Other Rules May Apply.
Red states need cops. Might be time for these two to start checking their options elsewhere.

Pretty sure I know who SHOULD be fired.
I actually had a good time in Detroit when I helped a friend move. The architecture is beautiful and downtown is quite nice. It was a ghost town for sure, but still very nice. But two miles out of town and it looks like Mogadishu .
Most of MI is red and is deep red in many counties, these officers won’t have far to go. You have countless townships, cities, and counties for these officers to move to...welcome to your new town only 30+ miles away!
Sorry, if your “policy” goes against federal laws, then it is not enforceable.

My neighbors (2) of them are Police and Border patrol. They have burner phones just for this purpose. Most of them do. LOL!!
I'd like to see the DPD go on strike on behalf of these suspended officers.
