Historic trade deals put India on global stage - but challenges remain
BBC ^ | 18th February 2026 | Nikhil Inamdar

From a trade perspective, 2026 would probably go down in history books as an epochal year for India.

March has not even begun and Delhi has concluded the "mother of all trade deals" with the European Union and also what's now being termed the "father of all trade deals" with the United States - even though grave concerns remain about the asymmetric nature of the interim agreement which, many say, is stacked heavily in favour of the US.

Nonetheless, the pact is India's 10th free trade agreement (FTA) since 2014, signalling a sharp pivot from its protectionist stance that previously forced negotiations with several countries to languish for decades.

Fresh off the back of these new pacts, India has now also agreed to start talks for a deal with the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) bloc, accounting for 15% of its global trade.

...Unlike Vietnam or even Bangladesh, which have followed export-oriented manufacturing, emphasising on export promotion policies and large-scale foreign direct investment, "India's manufacturing push, in comparison, has been fragmented, less urgent and hesitant to expose domestic firms to foreign competition. This needs to change faster", Priyanka Kishore, founder of the Singapore-based Asia Decoded think-tank, told the BBC.

The success of Vietnam's strategy is there for everyone to see.

Its merchandise exports, which were about a third of India's in 2010, have now almost reached parity, according to World Bank Data, even though gross domestic product (GDP) is only around a tenth of India's.

Why? H1-B workers are making it possible for American corporations to stay competitive and exist in USA, instead of outsourcing all the work abroad via world wide web!
None of the H1-B’s are on welfare, none are fighting ICE, none are in prisons. All pay every local, state & federal tax. Focus on getting rid of illegals who increase your taxes by sucking on tax payers teats.

Trump's $100k fee for employers on each H1-B is a great first step. I wish it was an annual fee instead of a one time thing, but it's still a great start - if you need someone so badly you have to hire from abroad, prove it. Prove you're not just under-cutting American salaries.

India is one gigantic open sewer in a garbage dump. How did they become a world power when they can’t even stop crapping on the sidewalk?

“Its merchandise exports” India seeks to “manufacture software code” and AI dependencies.

Currently an IT project in the US hires 50% H1b and 50% Americans. If the H1b are sent back to India, then the IT projects will be offshored to India.

Be careful what you wish for.

1) Yes H1b is being abused. Many (but not all) H1b lack the ability and training to do what is necessary

2) The real problem is the failure of the US Education system to educate. I have seen too many Americans in IT with a college degree(s) who cannot do 8th grade math, who lack basic ability in logic, in cause and effect, who lack basic ability to read and comprehend what they read.

Yeah. They depress wages and companies abuse it. I don’t care that they aren’t on welfare. They’re not supposed to be. Mike Lee is that you?

Except they lied and said it was an annual fee and then backtracked. It’s a drop in the bucket and can be made back in one year. Total crap headfake.

That is bull. There are plenty of well qualified IT people who are out of work and were forced to train their replacements. Plenty of H1B Indians who can’t speak English, can’t do basic tasks, sleep at their desks, can’t use a toilet properly and stink like ass.

Look at what Indians have done to FedEx, among other American companies. Better wake up.

Most H1-B workers are computer programmers, a very easy skill to learn. There are millions of programmers walking the streets in India, Eastern Europe, SE Asia. Those days of high wages for computer programmers are long gone. wages are not depressed, supply & demand is at work. Good old capitalism. May be you want big wages for easy to learn jobs.

Many complicated factors:
Example
Primary employers who used to recruit directly now recruit thru the recruiting firms. And Indians have taken over the RECRUITING business and turned it into a multilayer maze.

If it’s easy to learn then hire Americans.

Yeah and they are all in HR. Which begs the question what particular skill does HR require to have H1Bs infecting that department?

Americans will not work for the wages foreign workers will accept. CEO’s of Google, Microsoft, IBM etc are all foreigners. That tells me Americans lack the skills to run those outfits.

Wrong. Tired old excuse. Just doing the jobs Americans won’t do. Bush’s bullcrap.

It’s a 1 time fee... and the ones that are already here (in the millions) don’t have to pay for it.

They ALL need to be shipped back, and all VISAs need to be stopped for the next generation, at least.
