Puerto Rico's Republican governor on Thursday signed a bill that amends a law to recognize an unborn baby as a human being, which opponents argued could eventually lead to outlawing abortion in the U.S. territory.
Gov. Jenniffer González said in a statement that the measure "aims to maintain consistency between civil and criminal provisions by recognizing the unborn child as a human being."
The amendment, in Senate Bill 923, altered an article within Puerto Rico's Penal Code that defines murder.
The government said that the amendment complements a law affirming that it would be first-degree murder if a suspect intentionally and knowingly kills a pregnant woman, resulting in the death of the conceived child at any stage of gestation.
The legislation was named after Keishla Rodríguez, a pregnant woman who was killed in April 2021. Her partner, former Puerto Rican boxer Félix Verdejo, was convicted in the killing and received two life sentences.
Supporters of the law said it was designed to provide consistency between civil and criminal codes and focus on harsher punishments for the murder of pregnant women and that it was unrelated to abortion, but critics argued that it opens the door to eventually criminalizing the procedure in Puerto Rico, which remains legal.
"A zygote was given legal personality," Rosa Seguí Cordero, an attorney and spokesperson for the National Campaign for Free, Safe and Accessible Abortion in Puerto Rico, told The Associated Press. "We women were stripped of our rights."

Maybe granting statehood to Puerto Rico isn’t such a bad idea after all. If they elected a governor of this calibre, their choice of senators might be comparably sane, God willing.
No...two Rat Senators and several Rat House members. But this is certainly hopeful.

They got it right in one place but consistently get it wrong everywhere else.
Support PR statehood. Viva la independencia!
Charming, Valerie is “outraged”
Are Puerto Ricans, perhaps more conservative on some issues than people might think? I know the stereotype is that, as Hispanics, they’re automatically considered Democrat voters.
I’ve heard Puerto Rico has different political coalitions than just the mainstream Republican and Democratic parties. But I have never looked into it in detail.
Do we know about the Puerto Rican vote in Florida? I recall after hurricane Maria , hundreds of thousands of Puerto Ricans relocated to Florida. And there were fears that they could help tip the balance of Florida back to the Democrats.
All the PR i know love Trump even my wife. We are in FL.
Great, except for one slight change.
Democrats demand ICE round up Puerto-ricans and deport them back to Puerto-Rico as well as remove Puerto-Rico from the Union.
I only know a few PR — in Orlando. They think China is better than the USA. Yet here they are.
The Puerto Ricans I know appreciated Bad Bunny’s shout out to their culture, the sugar cane, etc, but were OUTRAGED by the sexualized prancing and X rated lyrics.
I call that conservative.
Meanwhile, If, as a result of a procreative act, something is growing inside of a women, which not only possesses uniquely human DNA which will naturally result in a functional, intelligent human being (including his/her personality), but which will quite rapidly be increasingly manifest to be a human, then what is the logical conclusion as to what it is? A human life, and person, or something akin to a cancerous growth, or even human sewage (as in most cases of abortion now)?
To value that life as less than a person due to location (safely "quarantined" in the mother's womb) and or upon degree of functionality, and thus terminate its life, treating this human life as a tumor to be dispensed with - and in most all cases is due to reasons of convenience* - is to value this life less than even the nest of a migratory bird (illegal to even disturb), let alone break eggs or otherwise kill a migratory bird.
And note that this procreative act is almost always consensual, and with *approx. % of abortions being due to rape, and about 2% necessary to save the life of the mother (and not just a physician's judgment that the child would/could have some adverse effects on the woman's health), and with "reasons of convenience" being in reference to avoiding sacrifices of time, money, education, etc., meaning sacrifices such as parents in the past made, and were overall rewarded by it.
Now, more money is spent on pets than ever before, and which outnumber children themselves.
They actually did something right, for a change.
What’s Bad Bunny’s take on this “Puerto Rican culture”? < / s >
theimesofisrael.com reported Circa 2024 that then-Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear
was a rare beast in the 2024 political landscape: a Democratic governor in a solidly red state.
In deep red Kentucky, the governor’s biggest political battles have hinged on hot-button topics:
<><>transgender health care
<><>and abortion rights.
Beshear, now openly angling for a presidential bid, says his “values are grounded in my faith” that has found strong allies among Kentucky’s Jews.
Beshear and his wife are deacons at a local church.
Then Gov-Beshear vetoed a law banning certain medical procedures for transgender youth, which the Republican-controlled state legislature introduced weeks after the trans son of the chamber’s only Jewish lawmaker died by suicide; state Republicans then overrode his veto.
A Democratic state lawmaker, inspired by her friendship with an Orthodox Jewish constituent, “linked anti-trans legislation to antisemitism.”
A PRO-LIFE JUDGE?
Beshear opposed pro-life Kentucky’s near-total abortion ban.
The abortion ban was challenged in court by three Jewish women alleging that the law “infringed upon their religious freedom rights.”
A Kentucky judge threw out the lawsuit, saying they “lacked standing.”
Judge rules against law in 3-2-1
Side question has the garbage problem been solved, the real point of the “joke”
“We women were stripped of our rights.”
No, murderer (or wanna be), your rights end when/where another person begins.
A pregnant human (female, but that should go without saying), is not going to give birth to a goat, or a Labradoodle - they’re going to give birth to a HUMAN.
