The Supreme Court of Virginia on Friday agreed to allow Democratic lawmakers’ mid-decade redistricting attempt to move forward, announcing it will hear the case on an expedited basis. The court denied Republican lawmakers’ motion to pause a redistricting referendum as the high court deliberates the case.
The order means voters will be able to approve or reject the redistricting amendment in a referendum scheduled for April 21, 2026. The effort would redraw Virginia’s congressional maps, with 10 districts favoring Democrats and one tipped towards Republicans.
Almost immediately after the order was released, Democratic leaders emphasized that the decision to redistrict or not will be in the hands of Virginians this spring.
“It’s a question of whether people want to move forward that’s responsive to the redistricting that we’ve seen in other states,” Gov. Abigail Spanberger said while walking with reporters in Capitol Square Friday. “Certainly the General Assembly was clear with the amendment process they put forward, and now it’s up to voters.”
Virginia House Speaker Don Scott, D-Portsmouth, also echoed the sentiment. Virginia’s redistricting effort is a response to President Donald Trump kicking off redistricting squabbles nationally by encouraging GOP-led states to fortify their party by redrawing their Congressional maps, Scott said.
“We have a president that’s run amok,” Scott said in a press gaggle Friday morning. “So we have no choice but to respond and try to do everything in our power to level the playing field.”
While Virginia’s redistricting amendment surfaced in recent months, the national debates first began late last summer when Trump prompted Texas to redraw its maps. Other GOP states began following suit and the Democratic states like New York and Maryland began their own processes.
House Minority Leader Terry Kilgore, R-Scott, made no reference to Trump or Republican states redistricting on Friday, but lamented other Democratic-led states’ efforts. With the redistricting process still moving forward, he noted the outreach efforts his party will need to do to counter Democratic messaging.
“We’re going to make the case to Virginians that this is unfair, this is unprecedented, and, you know, quite frankly, it’s against the law we believe, and we will ultimately win in court,” Kilgore said.
The court’s order also allows Attorney General Jay Jones to intervene in the case. All parties must file their opening briefs with the court by March 23.

“The court’s order also allows Attorney General Jay Jones to intervene in the case.”
This is funny.
His way of “intervening” would probably be to call for the lynching of every Republican running for Congress.
I think Trump and company did the math on a national scale and realized the pubs would win more in an all-out naked gerrymandering war because so many blue states have already been gerrymandered to death that they can’t really gain as much as the red states. Deep purple states like Va were sacrificed and will probably never recover any pub viability. Pretty much all parts of the state except the a single slice to the west will have part of their districts into north Va or Richmond or other urban areas. It’s a 10-1 map.
Freegards
So a vote of the Democrat majority to decide if Republicans should be able to vote.
“It is the will of the people” to give the disenfranchisement cover as legitimate.
4 foxes and 3 chickens voting on what is for dinner...literally fits that analogy.
Meanwhile, Indiana did nothing to counter this.
The Democrats also claim “Republicans started it” in Texas, when they know full well they started it in places like Illinois and New York and it was Republicans responding to that in Texas. The narrative from the media is just lie after lie after lie.
What I've seen happening in Virginia is beyond sickening. I know the majority of the state did not vote for this treasonous activity, but the small part that did, and negated votes in the rest of the state, should be excised and given to Maryland. They are not true Virginians anymore.
I’m from (regrettably) Indiana and to see what the GOP led senate did angered me beyond words. Thanks to the likes of the traitor Mike Pence, and those in the vein of Richard Lugar, their actions led the way to failure. I’m so sick of what has happened to Indiana, but where else is there to go? This kind of madness is everywhere.
Thank you indiana a-holes
Yes. Rats. Descriptive.
Yep.
From another site, a couple of months ago (regarding the virtuous cowardice of the Indiana state Senate): "And then there's the whole bullshit idea of "Republican gerrymandering very bad", "Democrat 'response' merely self-defense".
Democrats for years have relied on judicial mid-decade redistricting rather than doing it legislatively. What liberal judges have done frequently on behalf of Democrats is far worse than anything President Trump and the GOP are trying here, but of course the media spin is that what is happening now is "unprecedented".
Indiana illustrates the risk involved with trying to do things the right way; it can be difficult to get a sufficient number of RINO legislators to overcome their fears and vote properly on some redistricting plan. However ONE solitary black-robed liberal tyrant can singlehandedly mandate not only that a Republican map be scrapped -- normally by decreeing it to be "racist", with no pertinent evidence required -- but that it be replaced with a map which is guaranteed to cause a specific outcome which is desired by Democrats."
Odds of a federal judge halting this like they do any Republican plan?
I’ve read that Republicans have simply been ungerrymandering what the Democrats have been gerrymandering over the decades.
That’s actually correct. Look at the so-called GOP “gerrymandered” maps in Texas and Missouri, etc. - actually are compact, not spider-webby, etc. It appeared they actually gave the Democrats a district or two previously for the appearance of “fairness.” Then compare those maps to Illinois, New York, etc.
- but that it be replaced with a map which is guaranteed to cause a specific outcome which is desired by Democrats.”
Happens in NC all the time...We are in court for decades fighting for our maps...
