Tesla Model Y outsells all EV rivals in Europe in 2025 despite headwinds

The Tesla Model Y was Europe’s most popular electric car in 2025, leading all EV models by a wide margin despite a year marked by production transition, intensifying competition, and anti-Elon Musk sentiments.

The result highlights the Model Y’s continued strength in the region even as Volkswagen overtook Tesla as the top-selling EV brand overall.

As per data compiled by JATO Dynamics and reported by Swedish outlet Allt om Elbil, the Tesla Model Y recorded 149,805 registrations across Europe in 2025. That figure placed it comfortably at No. 1 among all electric car models in the region.

The Model Y’s performance in Europe is particularly notable given that registrations declined 28% year-over-year. The dip coincided with Tesla’s Q1 2025 transition to the updated Model Y, a changeover that temporarily affected output and deliveries in several markets. Anti-Elon Musk sentiments also spread across several European countries amidst the CEO’s work with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Tesla’s last earnings was a disappointment. I also have seen various ratings that show Tesla as only middle of the pack as far as reliability. With that said the hate for Musk online is unhinged.

“The Karen-mobile”

Ah..no. I still worry about the AWFUL Karens vandalizing my Y. It is really an amazing vehicle. You can easily do a 30 minute test drive and see for yourself. You show your drivers license. They show you the basics. Then you drive off for 30 minutes by yourself. On return, drop off the key card and you are on your way. No pressure to buy etc. I had no idea how comfortable a vehicle it was. What really sold me was the Full Self Driving. The vehicle can literally drive you from coast to coast.

I have kids with Teslas. They are big fans and repeat buyers. I did ride in a Lucid Air Touring this past fall and THAT really did impress me. Over 500 miles range and an interior luxury that is incredible.

“Tesla’s last earnings was a disappointment.”

Actually came in ABOVE expectations.

“I also have seen various ratings that show Tesla as only middle of the pack as far as reliability”

Nope.
Consistently come in tops in reliability.
Even the top French motor magazine gave Tesla the top ranking in reliability,
And the French currently don’t like Musk or Trump that much.

Have you had to replace anything?

I just posted this on another thread.
One of my friends has a model Y.
70K miles. Three sets of tires. Although one set was replaced after their roof replacement company left nails all over his driveway.
He has had to replace front brakes.

He is at the local Tesla dealership right now getting a headlight replaced. He said they had to remove the bumper.
$1400.

Tesla has greatly improved since their initial auto offerings. They are in the middle of the pack according to Consumer Reports most recent rankings. Keep in mind that CR does a survey annually of their subscribers. You have to fill out their questionaire. Which I understand to be a sample size of around 600K participants. So, from a statistical standpoint it is a large sample.
In addition, they DO NOT take advertising revenue from manufactures.

https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/car-reliability-owner-satisfaction/who-makes-the-most-reliable-cars-a7824554938/

These rankings are of typically newer autos too. So, even though BMW is ranked fairly high, it is still very expensive to maintain a Beemer once it is 5 years old.

What I do not understand is people who continue to buy Jeeps, Chrysler, Dodge, Jaguar, Land Rover(no longer even on their report they are so bad) and others that are consistently at the bottom of their and JD Power rankings.

One of the things Elon admitted on Joe Rogan was that there is a lot more to producing an automobile than the battery and drive train. When you push the button people actually expect the windows to go down. I am paraphrasing. But is was something like that.

Tesla has come a long way in a relatively short time. Their initial quality was not good. It is now a lot better than it was.
The question I have is how many miles will they actually go before the battery is done and therefore virtually worthless. Then WHAT do they do with the old batteries?

What a shock for the Tesla haters: Auto Plus, the car magazine with the biggest audience in France (by far), awards the reliability crown to Tesla in 2026!

386 times earnings? So true. Maybe what I saw was a one off. Toyota was tops with German cars coming in middle of the pack.

He must have been out of the 4-year/50,000-mile warranty. Tesla's don't use regular headlights. The newer adaptive high-beams are amazing. Maybe he can upgrade.

70K miles. Three sets of tires.

Teslas are heavy cars. But, they still will get over 35k miles on a set of tires if you don't drive it like you stole it.

He has had to replace front brakes.

Teslas use regenerative braking to help charge the batteries. They don't coast. When you take your foot off the accelerator, they start regenerative braking by using the electric motors as generators, which makes them slow down fast without using the brakes. Brakes will normally last a long time in a Tesla as long as you don't have your foot on the accelerator all the way to the stop sign.

Women with broad asses consistently love this thing. 45 years ago, the same liked the AMC Pacer. From my experiences, they are usually bitchy AWFULs.

Karens.

I understand and am not against Teslas.
BUT $1400 to change a headlight is ridiculous.
This is also why I will never own a Mercedes, BMW, Range Rover, Jaguar or any of those vehicles.
Which are very expensive to maintain.

EVs don’t have to change the oil or refill with fuel or other routine maintenance.
However, they occasionally start on fire from a runaway charge.
A house about a mile away burned to the ground about a mile away this past week.
It started in the garage at 7am.
Pretty sure they had an EV.
The local fire department showed up and basically kept it from spreading to neighboring houses.
The house burned to the ground.

So, do I want a 1000 pound Lithium battery charging next to me at night.
No thanks.
I don’t even charge my 30 volt Stihl hedge trimmer battery overnight.
When they come out with a solid state battery that is not going to burn my house down while charging I may buy an EV.
Until then I will Pass

BUT $1400 to change a headlight is ridiculous.

It depends upon what the headlight is. Teslas aren't Toyota Corollas. They don't use headlights that you can pick up at Walmart. The newer adaptive high-beam Tesla headlights are absolutely amazing.

A house about a mile away burned to the ground about a mile away this past week. It started in the garage at 7am.

Then, how do you know it was an EV that started it? My friend lost his entire lakeside house to a fire in his boathouse. I guess that's what he gets for buying a boat.

So, do I want a 1000 pound Lithium battery charging next to me at night.

I've been living in a solar-powered home now for going on two years. The solar shed where the batteries and inverters are located is still standing. They discharge and charge everyday. But, I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Yes, BUT you have the batteries in a SHED separate from the house. Which is the correct way to do it. It is typically building code in most locals.
This is the way all solar off grid battery systems are set up. That way IF one of the batteries overcharges/overheats and starts a fire it will not burn down the house/structure it is powering.

This is also why all the EV manufacturers recommend charging your vehicle outside at least 30’ away from your residential building. This is also why superchargers are located in parking lots away from the commercial buildings.
This is because the FIRE DEPARTMENT WILL NOT BE ABLE TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. They can only isolate it and let it burn itself out. Then haul away the burned out frame and immerse it in a tank of water for several days. Many cities have built water immersion tanks for this purpose. They also purchased fire proof blankets to cover the EV during transport.

Lithion Ion batteries are dangerous. My original Motorola Smart phone got so hot sitting on my desk charging that I could not touch it. I unplugged it and exchanged the phone the next day. I have also had this happen with a Dell laptop computer Lithium battery. Those batteries are less than ONE POUND in mass. The Lithion battery in an EV is 1000 pounds.

The boathouse fire you referenced is not unusual. That is why most boats have a fuel shut off switch. It is also why there is a blower to exhaust the fumes from the engine compartment on inboard gasoline engines. This is also why commercial vessels use diesel instead of gasoline engines.
It is why gasoline engines are typically set up as outboards. However, ANY volunteer fire department can extinguish that type of fire. Rural volunteer fire departments typically are NOT equipped to extinguish an EV fire. Their only choice is to let it burn itself out and try to keep it from spreading to adjacent structures.

I stated that Lithion Ion batteries are dangerous.
I am leaning right now against a ORORO battery heated vest. My second.

I also just purchased a pair of battery heated ski gloves.

I have Milwaukee battery operated drills.

I have a Stihl 30 volt hedge trimmer and chain saw.

I have another small chain saw with a 6” blade that is great for trimming a small branch off a tree.

I charge all of these regularly.
The only one I don’t charge overnight are the 30 volt batteries for the hedge trimmer and chainsaw. Those batteries are the same size as a motorcycle battery.

I also have multiple 2 cycle small engines. As these become old and expensive to repair I replace them with battery operated equipment. It is much easier to maintain. However, I still have a Stihl gasoline chain saw. I still have a Scag twin cylinder Kawasaki gasoline engine zero turn mower.
I still have a 37 HP turbo diesel cab tractor. I still have a Honda 4 stroke gasoline snow blower.
