Washington — The Senate failed to advance a measure to fund the Department of Homeland Security on Thursday, likely paving the way for another partial government shutdown without a last-minute breakthrough.
In a 52 to 47 vote, all but one Democrat — Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania — opposed moving forward with the bill, which would fund DHS through September. The motion needed 60 votes to succeed. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a South Dakota Republican, voted against the motion in a procedural move that allows him to bring it up again.

Democrats want to restrict immigration agents from wearing masks, require them to wear identification and body cameras and standardize their uniforms and equipment. They also want to ban racial profiling, require judicial warrants to enter private property and bar immigration enforcement at medical facilities, schools, child care facilities, churches, polling places and courts. And they pushed to impose "reasonable" use-of-force standards; allow state and local jurisdictions to investigate and prosecute "excessive force;" and introduce safeguards into the detention system.

how much of Department of Homeland Security funding goes to local police and other law enforcement will it snowball ?
It means air traffic will be disrupted. The last time the dems forced this they ate crow.
Immediately shut the borders down and suspend immigration indefinitely.

One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBBA) Act, signed into law on July 4, 2025, provided approximately $190 billion in funding to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) through September 30, 2029.

The American people will say “The GOP controls the House, the Senate, the Presidency and the majority of the Supreme Court. But they can’t run the government or keep it open or even pass a bill most of the time. And everybody yells at each other in DC. And everybody’s fighting each other over the illegal aliens in the cities. Maybe give the Dems a try next time.”

Understand one thing - the 60-vote threshold is only for cloture, an agreement that the filibuster should be ended, and that approval goes forward. But what if Majority Leader John Thune insisted on a REAL filibuster, a talking filibuster that would require every Democrat to stand up there on the floor of the Senate, and deliver all the objections they do or don’t have for the passage of the bill, and not allow the Senate to recess or escape to avoid a quorum call, until the objections had been fully talked out? There are only so many times they can reiterate the same talking points. The Senators, as individuals, have only so much bladder capacity, and some may have difficulty in even being able to speak after only a few hours, but once they are sufficiently weary of the charade, then perhaps they will listen to their own tired bodies, if not to reason.
This was the way filibusters were run back in the days of FDR, Truman and even Eisenhower. It was an endurance contest back then, and it can be again.
Whoever blinks first.
