A Houston doctor is facing federal charges for allegedly falsifying medical records to make potential transplant recipients ineligible for organ donations, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
The DOJ said John Stevenson Bynon Jr., 66, has surrendered to federal authorities on five counts of making false statements in health care matters. He was due in court at 2 p.m. on Tuesday. The DOJ said a grand jury returned the indictment on January 14.
Bynon is the former director of abdominal organ transplantation and surgical director for liver transplantation at Memorial Hermann Health System in the Texas Medical Center.
The DOJ accused Bynon of falsifying the medical records of some of his patients who were on the United Network for Organ Sharing liver transplant waitlist to make them "functionally ineligible for a donation."
"Many patients remained ineligible for months without knowing they could not receive organ offers during that time," the DOJ said in a news release.
The department said some of the doctor's patients "had dire health outcomes."
"Falsely manipulating organ transplant eligibility endangers lives and undermines the integrity of our health care system," said Special Agent in Charge Jason E. Meadows with the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Inspector General.

I’d love to know why he did that.

I agree. Wonder IF by eliminating donors others would move up the list. Might have been bribes
That’s my thought as well.

I suspect we will find out this doctors criteria for who should be eligible for a transplant is different that the national criteria. We have a limited supply of organs for transplant. They should be reserved for those that benefit the most, particularly the young. I am old, 77. It would be unethical to give me a new liver or heart when a young person needs it. His actions may have been altruistic or he is a little bit crazy.
I know of which I speak as an organ donor for my brother. He received half my liver.
“””””Memorial Hermann Health System in the Texas Medical Center.”””””
I was born at Hermann hospital, they have probably remodeled since then so I might not recognize the delivery room.
The following celebrities went to the top of the liver transplant list:
Mickey Mantle
Larry Hagman
Greg Allman
Evel Knievel
Freddy Fender
George Best (soccer)
Jim Nabors
Shelly Fabares
Steve Jobs
David Crosby
Bernie Kosar
This is also why you shouldn’t have an organ donor card.
Those doctors will strip you like stolen car even if you are not fully dead.
Yep. No Do Not Resuscitate paperwork either.
Make it as hard as possible for them to put you down for the benefit of society.
I'd guess politics. I'd guess he did this to people he though were too MAGA. But, just a guess.
Did it grow back 100%?
How did Mickey Mantle get a liver transplant AFTER being diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer? It should have made him ineligible but it was claimed that the diagnosis was missed/delayed until after the new liver was received. He then died pretty soon after. As he would have anyway and his priceless donated liver was buried with the rest of him. That never seemed on the up and up
NBC did a special on Larry Hagman, David Crosby, and Mickey Mantle. It was called ‘Liver Let Die’.
Somewhat related. Hubby is a professional driver, and for a long time he did some work driving a local man into the big city for medical appointments.
The passenger was a lovely, older man, who had a bad ticker. The doctors intended to give him a heart transplant. As time went on they transferred his case from Big City Hospital #1 to Smaller but Badder City Hospital #2 because (sad to say though it might be) the young men are shooting each other all the time in Smaller but Badder city, so organs become available more frequently.
He got so far along in the process that we were wondering if they’d give hubby a beeper so he too could be notified.
And then they “discovered” that the man had only one kidney. He’d lost the second one years before, I forget how.
So, he was off the list, no new heart for him.
He lived a while longer, and then passed away.
I always have wondered, did they really not know this? Was this impairment a big surprise? Or were they just billing the heck out of him and the insurance cos. until it became time to cut bait.
Taking known Republicans off the list? To make room for more Democrat recipients?
Seems to be a lot of evil doctors these days.
I don’t even think they do the oath to do no harm any more, or if they do, they have changed the meaning of the phrase no harm to have exceptions for abortion and such.
Yes. The remaining lobe will start growing until you have all your liver function back. Thus I now have a misshaped liver of normal size. The liver is an incredible organ. It makes DuPont Chemical look like a kids chemistry set.
Understand your position but, not his determination to make is it ?
Prosecution is warranted..
