Summary
Anger is growing among Labour backbenchers over Keir Starmer's handling of the Lord Mandelson scandal
It comes after the prime minister told Parliament he was aware of the former business secretary's ongoing friendship with paedophile Jeffrey Epstein when he appointed him as UK ambassador to the US last year
Starmer said he was misled about the "sheer depth and extent" of Mandelson's relationship with Epstein
Asked on BBC Newsnight if the prime minister should step down, Labour MP Barry Gardiner said: "I think he needs to think very hard about what is in the country's best interest"
MP Rebecca Long-Bailey said Starmer's decision to appoint Mandelson was a "catastrophic misjudgement"
After pressure from the Conservatives and some Labour MPs, Starmer said the government would release all material relating to Mandelson's 2024 appointment - barring national security and "international relations" exemptions
There is a sense of fury across the Labour Party, with the latest events leaving the PM's authority severely weakened, writes our correspondent Harry Farley
Mandelson has not responded to requests for comment - the BBC understands his position is that he has not acted in any way criminally and that he was not motivated by financial gain

If Labor change leader there will be calls for a General Election.
The atmosphere in Westminster/London is described as febrile
Labor are in open revolt!
They’re revolting, alright.
If you follow the media in the UK, they are in a full-blown meltdown over Peter Mendelson, I don’t know who Mendelson and why people are in such a meltdown over him.
I know he’s a pervert based on the information from that latest Epstein files and he’s under criminal investigation over what he’s done.
But one of the most telling comments, I thought, didn’t come from the legacy media but from social media in a throwaway remark that predicted: “You just know that in 9 months’ time they’re all going to be tearfully accepting awards from each other for their ‘fearless’ reporting of the downfall of Mandelson”.
Disagree. I think this is Labour “lightening the troika.” I don’t think they actually disagree with Starmer but are desperate to try to cling to some power and are willing to throw Starmer overboard in an attempt to do so.
After all, they didn’t care when it was Jimmy Savile - Labour went to quite the trouble to help bury that one.
Mendelson is the original “spin doctor” - responsible for deflecting many, many, many scandals that should have sunk Labour under Blair and later.
They all have been screwing every one of their people for years. Now they pretend to be angry over just a few kids.
Give me a break.
Rubbish. Labour knows that if a General Election is called, Reform wins. To minimize the already small possibility of an election being called, Labour will stick with Starmer.
Given that that oily creep Farage is distancing himself from Tommy Robinson (because Robinson's of a lower class than Farage), the "reformation" of Britain is unlikely to happen.
When looking at politics in Britain everything, and I mean everything is affected by what social class one's a member of.
Well, Labour does not need to call an election even if they change party leader. The new party leader will be the new PM.
Unfortunately, if Starmer is kicked out - as he should be - it is likely that the hard left will gain the upper hand in Labour. In that case there will be another couple of hard years for Britain before the next election, when Labour will be ousted.
Noticed that many Trump haters turn out to be “friends” of Epstein?
What a surprise - NOT!
Mark Steyn's friend Delingpole told him "that the people who really run the world possessed kompromat on everybody else, and you weren't allowed to advance into the upper echelons of the global political class unless they had something on you".
The Trump haters are to a man (and woman) in-people.
The issue has never been about a “few kids”.
It has always been about blackmail of public officials.
The “few kids” is just the excuse fed to the peons.
